Involving Children in Service:: Operation Christmas Child

Posted Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Christmas is fast approaching and Operation Christmas Child is in full swing.

Have you come across Operation Christmas Child before? It’s a global operation run since 1993 by Samaritan’s Purse where families, churches, schools and businesses put together gift-filled shoe boxes to be distributed to children in need. From 1993 through 2012, some 100 million gift boxes have been handed out in more than 130 countries.

To pack a box for a child, all you need is a shoe box and a selection of presents. Different countries have different specific guidelines about what presents to include, but in general you want to pack:

Something to love
Something for school
Something to wear
Something to play with
Something for personal hygiene
Something special

Take care to look into the restrictions on what shouldn't be included.

You select whether you want to pack for a boy or a girl and the age (2–4, 5–9 or 10–14 years old) of the child. The presents don’t have to be expensive. For example, there is a great range of handmade creations under $15USD that could be used to pack a box right here on Etsy from EtsyKids Members.

Something to love (top left) - Monster Plush from ‘Bright Life Toys
Something for school (top middle) - Crayon Roll Up from ‘Happy Babee and Beeyond
Something to wear (top right) - Horse Brass Tee from ‘From Marissa V.’
Something to play with (bottom left) - Wooden Flipping Spinning Top from ‘apple n amos
Something for personal hygiene (bottom middle) - Pinwheel Hair Clip from ‘Magnificence
Something special (bottom right) - Reusable Sandwich Bag from ‘the Greener Route

Every child deserves to feel special and getting a present at Christmas time brings a boy or girl a lot of joy. In addition, learning to give is an important lesson for kids. In my house, the toddlers really loved selecting and wrapping a present for someone else and they were so proud to carry them into the drop off centre and add them to the pile.

The drop off dates are fast approaching. Start packing now!

Mom to Mom:: A febrile convulsion changed our view on everything...

Posted Friday, October 18, 2013

Previously Posted by, Sarah of MeysMadeCoolCrochet, on her blog Meys Made Cool Crochet

Yesterday morning I thought I loved my girls more than anything. I thought I had no more love to give them. But yesterday when our two year old daughter started convulsing I suddenly discovered there was a massive amount of love in me that I wasn't even aware of... and quite a few regrets.

As our beautiful princess lay on the ground fitting with blood streaked foam coming out of her mouth all I could think was, "this is it."  This was that moment every parent fears. I thought our happy little girl was dying.

I felt so helpless. I could not do anything other than put her in the recovery position. I couldn't make her better. I thought our princess was dying and there was no way to stop it.

Between my cries out for help, desperately hoping they would make the ambulance arrive faster, all I could think of were all the regrets. All the times I put something else that wasn't even important before her. All times times I had become frustrated with her for silly reasons. All these stupid things that I regretted immensely.

After what seemed like hours but was less than a minute she stopped shaking. Her beautiful porcelain skin had turned a horrible white blotchy colour, her mouth was blue and her poor wee heart was racing.

When the ambulance arrived they instantly calmed us down. How they managed to achieve that I'll never know. Maybe it was the thought that it had to be OK now they had arrived. I remember thinking that nothing bad could happen now as they knew how to save her. I went from desperately clutching on to my daughter hoping she would be OK to watching her open her eyes in response to her name with relief. It was the exact same feeling you get when you hear your baby cry for the first time when they are born. Relief, pure and simple.

Ella then started crying. Really crying. The paramedics told us that was a really good sign. Then they gave Ella a beautiful penguin soft toy. How they knew penguins were her favourite I'll never know. Penguin calmed her down quite quickly. By the time we arrived at hospital Ella had stopped crying. I was desperate for her to say something, anything, so I knew she was OK. I didn't want her amazing cheeky personality to have been affected in any way. And then it came... "cuddle daddy". I burst into tears of happiness. Our little girl was in there still. Before we knew it she was playing with toys in the ED room, asking for a drink and telling her pop that he was silly.

We were told she had most likely had a febrile convulsion and that we had done the right thing calling the ambulance. It was caused by a spike in her temperature due to a virus (that we didn't know she had) and these are really quite common in children under 5. 1 in 25 kids will have one and we were told they can run in families. I put my parents through this three times as a child, as did my younger brother. She might have many more, this might be her only one. No one can say. Very rarely do they cause long term problems so most likely our little girl is going to be just fine.

As for my husband and myself though, this was a very traumatizing experience. One that we will never forget and one that has taught us a lot about what is really important in life. Everything can be taken away in a flash so you need to make the most of it when you can. Don't put things off until tomorrow. Try to make the most of every single moment you have with your kids. Most importantly tell them you love them. The thought of "Ella! Stop climbing on me!" possibly being the last thing she ever heard me say to her broke my heart. Toddlers are hard work and nobody is perfect, but this has really made us want to make that extra effort to be more patient at the end of a long, hard day.

Here is some information from kidshealth.org.nz about febrile convulsions. I really hope none of you have to go through this, but hopefully this information will help if you do.

Meet Etsy Seller We HIVE, Personalized Gifts & Fundraising

Posted Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to

We HIVE has been selling on Etsy since January 2012, she sell personalized story books for kids. Today she is sharing a little about her shop and selling handmade items.

Personalized Ballerina Princess Book, Ballet, Dance, Learn Ballet Steps, Ballet Lessons - wehive Nursery Rhymes - Personalized Kids Decor - Mother Goose - Made to Order - wehive Santa's Story - Made to Order - Personalized Children's Keepsake Story Book - Learning Toy - wehive Kids, Baby Toddler, Personalized Baby Shower, Birth Announcement, Infant, Memory Book, Personalized, Made to order, Baby Book - wehive

What motivated you to start your shop?
Well, as many Mothers can relate I desperately wanted to be home with my family, and I understood that it would definitely be a financial sacrifice. I didn't know if it was possible but I wanted to try to make it work, so to help out financially I started We HIVE in 2007.

This is the reason I wanted to make personalized story books my business.
I have learned to love reading but it was not always that way. I struggled to learn when I was young. I didn't understand the connection between letters, sounds and words. After struggling for some time, I was given a book that someone, I can't remember who, thought would help me. (They will never understand what a gift they had given me.) The book title and story had my name in it. "Susan's Secret Garden". I will never forget it. It was explained to me that the story was about me and that it actually had my name printed in it. I was so excited. I knew what my name looked like in print and went through all the pages looking for it. The story was so much fun as I could imagine myself in the story. I had the book read to me over and over and over! Soon, I was looking through the book by myself after having heard it so often and memorizing most of it. After that I was starting to put things together myself as far as reading went. It took some time but finally I wanted to read and was excited about it rather than afraid. I am so grateful for that book. I still have it after 38 years and will treasure it forever!

I love how reading empowers children at every level.

What is the story behind your shop name?
Acronym: We HIVE = We (You and Me) Help Invest Volumes in Education

Second meaning: We HIVE = working together as a community. If we thought of the world as one home for all “HIVE” and we all worked together imagine what we could accomplish. That is the meaning behind my shop name.

I really wanted my business to be meaningful. Not just in a financial way for my own family but by helping children in as many ways as I can with literacy, financially, meaningful gifts, charities locally and abroad, schools, children’s programs and more.

When you buy a personalized story book or have a fundraising event through We HIVE you are not just giving your child a great gift or helping your own organization. I take a portion of what I earn every year and donate to a children's organization. So your purchase is helping others as well.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I love all of my products but I have to say I have really enjoyed creating my “New Personalized Companion Journals”. You can now make a personalized journal out of any of the personalized story books covers. You can buy them alone or as a companion to the story book. My journals are personalized on the first page.

Eg. The Personalized Baby Book – A heart warming record of baby's birth. This heartfelt and popular book is special for both parents and children alike and makes a great Baby shower, Baptism, Christening, Christmas or personalized baby gift for any occasion.

Use the Personalized Companion Journal as a Pregnancy Diary before baby arrives so that you and your child will cherish those memories and create conversations for a lifetime or you may want to record baby’s first year. It is totally up to you.

Eg. My Tea Party - Planning a personalized tea party for friends requires hard work and aforethought. First she must decide who to invite and what to serve, then, what type of decorations are necessary. Setting up for the party, getting properly dressed and using proper manners are valuable lessons learned here.

Use the Personalized Companion Journal as a Recipe Book to store the baking recipes you and your child make together. You have your choice of lined or blank paper.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Getting the word out! Thank you EtsyKids for this opportunity.
My facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/We-HIVE-Personalized-Gifts-Fundraising/358554087506297

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I guess what I want to do is help people in as many ways as I can so I think that trying my best to buy products from merchants that are giving back is important to me and that is what I would like to help my customers to do.
This quote comes to mind. “Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving.” -Hank Rosso

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
I would say they would describe me as passionate about my interests. I think they would also describe me as a quiet person, loyal friend and someone they can confide in and count on.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I try to enjoy nature as much as possible. Bundled up with a good book outside with some warm tea on a cool breezy day or just sitting and watching the birds and squirrels foraging for food or even watching a spider spinning its web is heaven for me. I used to sketch wildlife but I haven’t had time since we started our family. I'm hopeful that I will be able to reignite that passion in the future.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
Yes. Imagine your child growing up and reading a story about themselves to their own children. Your grandchildren! What a wonderful experience to look forward too.

I wanted to mention why personalized gifts are so important to me. It is really important for me to not contribute to the world’s waste problem through my business. Personalized gifts (from my shop or another) are a great way to help reduce that problem. I do understand that many people have meaningful items that are not personalized that they will keep and treasure. They have likely given a lot of thought to that purchase for themselves or for someone else, I have a few myself. My thought is that to often we make a quick run to the department store to make that last minute purchase because we are so busy. Meaningful items personalized or not are less likely to become part of the landfill. So I chose to make personalized items for that reason. They will use less energy throughout their lifetime and are less likely to be given away, recycled or simply thrown out and more likely to become a treasured keepsake.

Theme's include: Adventure, Baby, Birthday, Christian, Christmas, Counting and Rhyming, Sibling, Sports, and more.

We HIVE is offering a whooping 40% discount in her shop at the moment. To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "CHRISTMASNOW40" at checkout. Valid until end of October 2013.

Clean Your Indoor Air

Posted Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Weather is starting to cool down, in some parts of the U.S. there has been snow!

Before you shut those windows for the cold, did you know that the EPA has named indoor air quality one of the top five environmental risks to public health? In fact, indoor air quality can be almost 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Curious as to why?

When we bring things into our home, or use certain products in the our home...the pollutants get stuck inside. We have gotten really good at making our home energy efficient, so it traps VOCs (volatile organic compounds) inside.

Want a quick easy way to help your indoor air quality?

Open the windows!

That is right, even for 10 minutes a day.

Now before you start worrying about wasting energy or freezing...you don't have to open them all the way. Even just cracking a few throughout the house can help get fresh air in...and take bad air out.

If you want to go a step further, bring in some indoor plants...such as English ivy, peace lily, Gerbera daisy or spider plant. These will help clean your indoor air.

Might I encourage you to dig even deeper?

Look at the cleaning products you are using. Many of them are giving off some pretty strong chemical smells. Those aren't healthy.

When you bring in new furniture made from particleboard there is some off-gassing (release of VOCs)of VOCs that can pollute your air.

Fresh paint, unless you used a no-VOC formula, gives them off.

Kids toys, new beddings...all these things off-gas in some way (organic/natural fabrics are safe as well as actual wood if it hasn't been treated with a harsh finish).

Scented candles, plug-ins and some fragrance oils (essential oils are not fragrance oils and are safe) pollute your air.

Now, not all of these can be avoided...they can be hard to find and out of our budgets...but opening your windows (and switching to more natural cleaning products) can make a big difference.

Are you concerned about your outdoor air quality? Head over to the AirNow, put together by the EPA, to check out current air quality.

Meet Etsy Seller eLeMeNOPkids

Posted Wednesday, October 09, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop eLeMeNOPkids

eLeMeNOPkids has been selling on Etsy since May 2012, they specialize in all things KIDS! They hand paint wall letters for your child's room, and also make various educational and fun activities geared toward keeping your little one learning, and using their IMAGINATIONS through pretend play! Today they are sharing a little about their shop and selling handmade items.

Personalized Letters from Santa - eLeMeNOPkids Wooden Rainbow Sorting Bowls-Montessori inspired - eLeMeNOPkids Hanging Wall Letters (5 letters). Handpainted and custom designed hanging wall letters for room or nursery - eLeMeNOPkids Felt Rainbow Popcorn Bag Set - eLeMeNOPkids

What motivated you to start your shop?
I was motivated to start my shop when I saw how many people loved my hand painted wall nursery letters. It expanded and grew over the past year into including more educational items for children, and I'm so grateful for the unending support I get from my customers.

What is the story behind your shop name?
Well, I was originally just painting nursery wall letters. And I knew I wanted my shop name to be something cute and "kid-y". And "LMNO-P" is kid-friendly and is all about letters, so I went with that. After a year I added the word "kids" to the end of my shop name so it could reflect what my business is all about.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
What surprises me the most is how many friends I've made online! I think I have more online friends that physical friends! I've really gotten to know a LOT of my customers, and I just can't believe the amount of support I receive--daily! It's incredible!

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
My favorite creations are my wooden toys. I am a Montessori-lover at heart and I love how my wooden toys encourage imaginative, yet educational invitations to play.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
It's hard to find time to add more products to my shop. I'm blessed to be busy, and I struggle with finding the balance between family and running the shop, but I'm very intentional of only working a certain number of hours a day. I don't want my little one to remember me just sitting behind my sewing machine or computer all the time.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I firmly believe play is the way children learn. It is fun for them and they can learn about themselves, the people around them, their environments, and build skills needed for the big world! Most of our toys are great for any child, and are even greater for those children who have autism, sensory problems, dyspraxia, and any other learning disability where they may need simple activities to keep them learning through play. I am inspired to create toys for those children who could benefit from having sensory toys that encourage open-ended play.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
I think someone would describe me as fun-loving and creative. My husband would just call me a chatter-box.

What do you do when you aren't working?
When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my family. They are the reason I have the honor to run my own business. My little one loves having me home with him, and my husband is amazing to work so hard so that I can stay home and do something I love. If I'm lucky enough to get a few minutes of "alone" time, you will find me taking a hot bath, reading a book, or laying on the floor playing with my puppies.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I just want to thank anyone for supporting me these past 2 years. I'm eternally grateful for all of the friends I've made through my business.

eLeMeNOPkids is offering 15% discount on all orders over $15. To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "ETSYKIDS" at checkout. Valid until 14th October 2013.

Pumpkin Harvest Party !

Fall is my favorite time of year ! The colors , The weather and the start of the holiday season . Harvests and pumpkins is what this months theme is all about . Embrace mother nature and all the amazing colors that are October and November . Set a theme with oranges, yellows, greens and browns you can even have a splash of maroon/wine red as well.

Location for this party is simple and easy outdoors and if you do not want to do the whole party outdoors for weather reasons you can do half inside and half outside . A lot of the local farms are great and set up for pumpkin picking pretty early I would call and ask if they throw birthday parties on premises.

The invites are the first thing your guests will see about your event and you should choose them with the theme and colors associated with the event . This invite from TooCuteInvites is adorable with 3 little pumpkins adorned with Glittered vines . The wording layer also has a fall inspired banner and leaves . Although they seem girly they can be done in a boy version as well .

Once the invites are in place its time to dress that little one ! Here are some great examples for birthday outfits and accessories. This dress from MySweetSunshine is stunning its a very stylish color block dress in  Coral, Brown and Black  perfect for any birthday girl ! She can also wear this great hair bow by CuteNCurlyBowtique made with the same color scheme ribbons with a little pumpkin in the center . Now for the little guys I love this shirt from JCoolCreations it is a little truck carrying a pumpkin and add his name for that special little detail.

Now that you have decorated the little ones lets decorate the party area ! To bring the outdoors in every craft store has leaves, pumpkins and scarecrows . I would decorate with the leaf garlands and wreaths on mantles , stairways etc. Buy little wagons and fill them with pumpkins and have them displayed in the rooms as well . Table linens can be fun fall patterns in the colors we discussed before and make little napkin rings out of  ribbons and tie in one of the little leaves from the garland or packs they sell of just leaves. These Pumpkin Centerpieces from CoffeeKidsNDolls are perfect for your table scape's and you can also tie in the balloons too to make it more fun for the kiddies. This Banner from RockAByeBabyStore is so cute in Burlap fabric and chevron letters that can be made coordinating colors . If you are A DIY mom you can download this adorable printable party from
PolkaPrints has everything you need to set this event up . You just fill out the information you need and print at home or any printing shop.
Favors are your way of thanking your guests for coming to your party and to remember the special day ! I love the Burlap or Flour Sack look I would buy these pumpkin Iron-ons from Alphabulous and Iron them to a favor bag making it look even more fall fabulous. For the little favors I love these adorable pumpkin crayons from ScribblersCrayons they are the perfect size for little hands and every kid loves to color ! I would even make my own little coloring book using Kraft paper , ribbons and printable pages from the Internet . Use the Kraft paper as the front and back covers they add 4-5 coloring pages and punch holes with a full page hole puncher and tie it in with fall inspired ribbon and personalize with a great stamp or write in the childs name on the front cover ! These great pumpkin hair clips from KristinsKeepsakes are made from felt and ribbon and are so cute to hand out to your little girl guests ! Add all these Items and some candy into the bags and you have an great party favor .

Activities and games for this theme can be anything outdoorsy ! Set up a pumpkin patch in your yard and have the kids Pick and paint there own pumpkins. Have a harvest scavenger hunt add fall items they can collect in little baskets and they can be busy collecting them with friends as teams or on there own. Bobbing for apples is always fun and kids love anything with water involved.

Food is always fun and yummy this time of year . Pumpkins are EVERYWHERE as far as flavors so make mini pumpkin pies , Pumpkin cheesecakes and pumpkin dip ! Caramel apples are a must as well as apple turnovers. Make mini chicken potpies or little pumpkin shaped grilled cheeses using a pumpkin cookie cutter. Always think of the kids first some may be picky but if you make it fun I am sure they will love it.

I hope you enjoyed these items as much as I did putting them together for you ! Please remember when you order from EtsyKids you are supporting parents just like you . Everything is made especially for your party and as I always say if you don't see something please use the ask a question button because I am sure they will make it wok for you !
