Introducing Babbidge Patch

Posted Thursday, July 19, 2012

Today We Introduce You to Cathy from Babbidge Patch

Q: What motivated you to start your shop?
I began marketing my knits through the traditional craft fair route. My kids were young and my lifestyle was flexible which aided pursuing sales via local events. Fast forward a few years (after a stint with wholesale and other opportunities) - slogging my wares to local craft fairs became somewhat of a burden, so I was thrilled to discover the wonderful world of Etsy in 2008; a global venue for crafters, vintage and suppliers! Craft fairs can be great venues however are particularly weather dependent and subject to the local economy. While I maintain my membership with two juried organizations, I much prefer the convenience of selling online. In fact, my first Etsy sale was a delightful international sale, my little mouse hat shipped from Maine to Spain.

Q: What is the story behind your shop name?
Babbidge Patch. We moved into a house on 13 acres on Babbidge Road in Falmouth, Maine. With our 3 children, we built a bountiful raised bed garden and converted a tractor shed into a cute bunny barn. I needed to come up with hang tags for my knit product, so I incorporated a bunny in the logo which represents the angora bunnies that we raised for a time, Babbidge from the road’s name and Patch from the garden plot --- Babbidge Patch, which became the name of my Etsy shop.

Q: What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Creating good quality photographs has been a challenge for me – if you look back at some of my initial sales, my first photos are not nearly as nice and bright as the newer pics. Also, over the past couple of years, I’ve traded product for photos in order to obtain professional pictures with the adorable models.

Q: What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
My designs are nature inspired, with many woodland creatures captured in the designs. My favorite and inspirational artists include Jane Thornley, Regine Faust, Dahlov Ipcar. I offer a variety of fibers which include: natural - wool, cotton, silk, bamboo; organic, and vegan options. Abundant texture and colors are important elements, as well. And the most important philosophies – create and offer quality product, fast shipping and outstanding customer service, and to Keep it Fun- take time away if it becomes stressful; slow it down by closing shop for a period of time.

Q: What do you do when you aren't working?
I’m trained as a biologist and I’m a Registered Maine Guide – so my hobbies include many outdoor activities - I tend an organic veggie garden and a perennial flower garden. I like to fly-fish, canoe, kayak, road bicycle and camp. I make time to visit with family – my 3 grown children and their families – we all live within 10 miles of each other so visiting is frequent. My husband and I have card night once a week with my parents and sister; and a movie night with a sister-in-law and her husband. Then, there is the day job – I work as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist for a Maine based company that provides products and services to the companion animal industry, and to the dairy and water industries.

Q: Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I manage 3 additional Etsy shops – you may notice their names all start with bp (short for babbidgepatch) and they focus on vintage, yarn supplies and photo shoot props:

Easy Oil Paintings

Posted Tuesday, July 17, 2012

By Cori of Peace, Baby! Batiks

My son and I are working through the alphabet with a “letter of the week,” and when I needed an art project for “O Week” a couple of weeks ago, I turned to this marbleized paper tutorial from Unplug Your Kids. For our purposes, I called them oil paintings.

Here’s what you need:
A shallow pan (I used a dish pan)
Food coloring
Vegetable oil
Water
Thick paper (We used watercolor paper and cardstock)
Dropper

First, mix up the colors. Stir together 1/2 tablespoon oil and several drops of food coloring for each color. Mix with a fork for several minutes to combine the two ingredients. (Next time I will try shaking it, as suggested in the original instructions. It's a little like salad dressing.)

Put just enough water in the bottom of your pan to cover the bottom. (The colors will sink if the water is too deep.)

Use the dropper to put dots of color on top of the water. Don’t be afraid to mix colors, put colors on top of each other, or swirl them around. My son is into mixing colors lately, so he loved mixing the colors together.

When you’re done adding colors, gently place a piece of cardstock or watercolor paper on top of the water. Let it sit there until you see the pattern of colors seep through the paper. Gently peel the paper off, let excess water drain off, and set aside to dry.

Change the water and try again!

We’ve used our oil paintings to make cards, and I’m thinking about getting frames for a couple of them. They’re so pretty!

Naughty and Nice

Posted Monday, July 16, 2012

I walked into the living room to discover Maizie playing with my Fashion Plates. That's right, my circa 1978 favorite Christmas present ever,  Fashion Plates.  We are still unpacking from our move, and my husband had piled my childhood stencil set onto my five year old's stack of drawing toys.  Although, how he could have confused my vintage 1978 Fashion Plates with her princess riffraff, I just can't understand.

I handled the situation in a completely adult manner.

"HEY, those are mine!" I announced. Besides, she was using the crayon in totally the wrong way to get a good transfer. She looked up from her paper. "Mommy, look what these do!"

" Yeah, I know, they're mine."

Next to the drawings she had just done, I saw a stack of my own old drawings.  My mom must have packed them all away together with the box, when I had outgrown the toy. I sat down with my daughter, and showed her how to use the crayon sideways to get a better outline.  I flipped over the stencils to show the different patterns she could use for fabrics. Together, we put together tops and bottoms and middles to make outfits.

I told her they were a Christmas present when I was a girl. "Your favorite-est?" she wondered.
I passed her the pink pencil, and looked at those eyes so intent on her picture."Yes, my very favorite-est".  She didn't know that I wasn't talking about my circa 1978 Fashion Plates.

Create a memory of your own to share with one of these treasures from the  Etsykids Team's Christmas in July sale .
