Summer Reading Kit for Kids: Free Printable!!

Posted Saturday, June 18, 2011

Today's post comes courtesy of theartofjoy.etsy.com.

Summer is a perfect time to visit your local library or bookstore and discover new books! When I taught elementary school, I would try to find ways to get my students excited about reading…

One of the things that I made for my students was a reading log and whoever had the most books read received a special prize from me the next school year. The kids loved it! This time around, I’ve created a whole Summer Reading Kit (two designs to choose from) for you to enjoy! You can download both designs from my blog.

I hope you find some wonderful new books this summer! We'd love to hear about your a recent good read and if you're looking for local summer reading programs to help reward your children reading through the summer, check out these summer reading programs.

Thanks Joy for sharing this printable with us! You can see more of Joy's work on her blog, creativemama.com and in her shop:

Owl About TZ Burps

Posted Monday, June 13, 2011

My daughter inspires everything I do at TZ Burps. I started with bibs and burp cloths when she was 2 months old. As she has grown, so have my products. They tend to match the stage of life she is in. I went from bibs to blankies, changing pads, hair clips, fairy wands, to last summer…plush owls and birds (her newest fave)!

They have become my favorite to make. I find myself hearting all the owl stuff on Etsy and we both point out owl stuff in the stores. It has taken over. What almost four year old asks to have an owl birthday party or be an owl for Halloween? That would be my daughter! I couldn’t be happier or prouder.

She can’t wait to start sewing. She is always asking to make an owl on the sewing machine. We just recently created an item that we can make together…crinkle owlies! A small minky dot owl with fleece body parts, stuffed with polyester fiberfill and a secret ingredient. The owlies have a ribbon loop at the top of their head so it can be hooked onto a car seat, high chair, stroller, etc. Their legs are made of heat sealed ribbon. So how does this involve my daughter? She came up with the name and the secret ingredient…fruit snack trash! She eats the fruit snacks, washes the empty fruit snack bag, then she stuffs it into the owlie! She thinks it is the coolest thing ever. Eat fruit snacks, reuse trash to save the Earth (as she says), and help mommy make something.

Tutorial:: Upcycled Crayons

Posted Sunday, June 12, 2011

Are you swimming in school supplies at your house? My kids brought home backpacks filled with all the used supplies from the school year. Some things have been tucked away to reuse next year, but others get cycled into the families general craft supplies.

A couple of weeks ago The Crazy Elephant shared a fun project using broken crayons on her blog, that she recently did with her son. She made cute upcycled crayons using the old, broken, ruddy ones that seem to multiply ten fold in the craft box when on one is looking. It's a great summer boredom buster that kids can be ultra involved in!

Start by collecting all the old crayons ... odds and ends, bits and pieces from the craft drawer, leftovers from the school, everything that's lost it's interest to play with. When we made them, everything got thrown in the mix, Crayola, RoseArt, freebie crayons from restaurants, fat, skinny, washable, glow in the dark, princess, you name it we used it. Each has their own unique melting qualities, and that made for some fun added dimensions when looking at the end product. But we are all really pleased with the results.

Next, remove the paper wrapper around each crayon and sort by color. Cereal bowls or custard cups work really well for this step. Depending on how many crayons you want to upcycle, sort by exact color, by similar color, or don't sort at all, and create a multi-colored rainbow crayons. Let your child experiment with it. Have them make predictions about how the crayon combination will look after they are melted.

The Crazy Elephant and I both used silicon molds, because they come in great shapes and make removing the crayons a snap! The Crazy Elephant used a Lego muffin mold and I used a star mold. But metal cupcake pans also work well.

I baked ours at 350 for about 15 minutes and then let them cool for a couple of hours, a friend using a metal pan melted hers at 350 for 10 minutes and years ago when Family Fun had this idea in their magazine they said to melt them at 250 for 15 minutes. I think it all depends on the kinds of crayons you are using, how big your molds are (FF's was no bigger than 2", and mine 2.75"), the brand of crayon you are using, and possibly the pan (silicon vs. metal?). So turn on your oven light and watch them closely. It takes them a while to cool enough to remove from the pan, so plan a trip to the library or the pool to make the waiting period easier!

Upcycled crayons are not only fun to make, but they are also fun for kids to use and make great gifts and party favors for birthdays, stocking stuffers, Valentines, or little extras in care packages.

If you're looking to purchase chunky crayon shapes to use for an upcoming party, EtsyKids Team Member, PreschoolDoll Designs, has lots of whimsical shapes to go with your theme, and individually wraps them, making them perfect party favors!

Thanks to The Crazy Elephant for this great project. Please check out her Etsy shop and blog!

Homemade Strawberry Applesauce

Strawberry season just ended here in MD, and the little patch in our garden produced up a storm! I hope you don’t think I’m bragging when I tell you I have enough berries in my freezer for three batches of jam. :) Yum!

My son has decided he doesn’t like strawberries this spring, so we’re not eating as many right off the plants as we have in the past. We’ve made smoothies (which he will drink, oddly enough), and a couple of weeks ago, I got the idea to mix them into applesauce. After some initial skepticism – “Why is this applesauce purple?” – my son gobbled it up. The adults in the house love it, too. It’s so easy that I don’t know why I ever buy applesauce!

Strawberry Applesauce

4c apples, peeled, seeded and sliced (I had galas in the house, but whatever you like will work.)
1 ½ to 2c strawberries, hulled (frozen OK!)

Place fruit in a saucepan with a couple of tablespoons of water to keep it from sticking. Let it cook over medium heat until the apples soften and the berries start to break apart. On medium, this took about 15 minutes.

Use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree the fruit. I like my applesauce a little chunky, so I don’t blend it for long.

Alternately, you can leave the peels and seeds on the apples, slice and cook them and then put the whole concoction through a food mill.

Let cool and enjoy! Great warm or chilly.

Cheers! -Cori of Peace, Baby! Batiks

Peace, Baby! Batiks, Say It With Me

Posted Tuesday, June 07, 2011

Just about every time I work on a new batch of T-shirts, my son Q, who is nearly three and a half, places an order. First, it was a purple dump truck. Easy enough. Then, it was a gray cat. Yep, I can do that.

Now, I don’t know what he’s thinking: he wants a Mars rover T-shirt. Luckily, he wants it for his fifth birthday. I mean, I love a good challenge, but I’m glad I have a year and a half to work on that rover! (For birthday No. 4, he wants a rocket. Pink, I think.)

My son is the reason I started my business, Peace, Baby! Batiks. I am a stay-at-home mom, and I adore it, and I want to be able to stay home after my son starts kindergarten in a couple of years. I want to remain flexible for my family for holidays and vacations and sick days. So, I get up early to melt the wax I use to make my designs, and I cram as much work as I can into naptime/quiet time each day. I drag my poor kid to the post office to mail packages. He’s started to ask, “Do we have to go in?” Thanks to buying postage on PayPal, most times I can say no.

At craft fairs and markets, Q is my best billboard. My husband always makes sure they’re both wearing one of my batik tees when they come to see me. My son will sit behind my table and smile at passersby. He’ll browse my inventory and pick out things he likes, often placing more orders for shirts he wants. Then, he’ll take Dad’s hand and go do a little shopping. (That’s my boy buying handmade!)

And, he’s my guinea pig. He gets all the prototype shirts when I am trying out a new design or color combination. The advantage to this? He’s got a batik shirt for just about every day of the week. Great for marketing!

Q is the original peace baby, and he’s the inspiration and driving force behind Peace, Baby! Batiks.

This Is Show Business, Not Show Fun

Posted Friday, June 03, 2011

In 1989, I got my undergraduate degree in Speech Communication, which doesn't really explain how two years later I was touring the country on a bus and truck production of The Sound of Music, as the Wardrobe Supervisor. We opened in Frederick, Maryland, and when the curtain came down at 10:30pm on the last performance, all the scenery, props, lighting, sound equipment and costumes would be loaded into two tractor trailors, for the first time.

Have you ever packed for a long trip, laying all your things out on the bed, then piling them in the suit case, only to find that no amount of jumping on the lid will allow you to close that zippper? Roadboxes and scenery littered the parking lot in the moonlight, waiting their turn to get loaded onto the trucks. The trucks would fill up, equipment left forlornly standing still waiting to make it into the pack. Empty the trucks and start again, and again.

The night sky turned to early morning sky while I stood with the other members of the road crew, watching the loaders wrestle roadboxes. We were new, our first tour, and from my old photographs we looked like twelve year olds. The Technical Director, Cliff sauntered over. He was not new, and he was a cowboy from Colorado, giving him sauntering rights. He barked at us to go help the loaders. The Audio Engineer, new, complained that 'was not going to be any fun'.

The Technical Director cut him off but directed this at all of us, "This is show business, NOT show fun! Now get to WORK." We did.

The parking lot was finally empty and the trucks packed. We zombies finally climbed into our tour bus. Cliff popped open a round of celebratory beers, and quietly admitted, "You've got to make your own show fun.

Call it a mantra. Call it a motto. I keep coming back to those lines "This is show business, not show fun. You have to make your own show fun." Alright yes, I have enjoyed a twenty year career in theatre, but that doesn't mean it isn't appropriate in other settings.

I've used it quite often this past year in my Etsy business. Filing sales tax returns are definitely not fun. Neither is entering 6 months of sales receipts. I like to make pretty things, why do I have to have a business plan? I hear Cliff's words again. It's all about perspective. I will learn to love Quicken Accounting software as much as pink satin.
