Etsy Kids Birthdays!

Today is my son's 2nd birthday. I can't believe how fast he has grown! He went from a tiny little new baby to a super charged, ready to run toddler overnight it seems. He is talking so much and learning new things everyday. He giggles constantly and finds joy in the simplest things.  I am so honored to be his mommy.  Here he is as a new baby, and how he is now :)

In honor of Connor's 2nd birthday, I wanted to show off some of the totally wonderful Birthday items our Etsy Kids Team makes on Etsy.  And let me tell you, there is no lack of items to make your Etsy Kid's birthday extra special!

First you need to invite everyone to the party!
Use these:
Personalized Invitations from Little Beane Boutique

Next you need to dress the Birthday boy (Perhaps in this super cute Personalized Birthday Boy Shirt from Gdavenport)

Or the birthday girl ( Maybe in this super fab Cupcake Flounce Birthday Twirl Skirt from Avery Lane)
And maybe this gorgeous headband from zuzugirl

Now let's not forget decorations!
These cute cupcake toppers from Ciaob ambino are sure to make any cowboy or cowgirl yell YIPEE!!

And you most definitely need a Fantastic Birthday Banner like this one from Paper Party Design Co

Now we musn't forget a gift for the birthday boy like this Creativity Wallet from Ducks In A Row Boutique

And for the birthday girl a Unicorn Finer Puppet by Harvest Moon By Hand

You can find all of these GREAT items and MUCH MUCH more by going to Etsy
and doing a search for Etsykids Birthday

Thanks for stopping by!

Oh the Humiliation!

Posted Monday, April 12, 2010

So my just-turned-three-year-old, to put it mildly (very mildly), is a stinker. I now fully understand the reason some people just stop at one, because there's never any bickering, sibling rivalry or contention until you add another. My house was so quiet before, and I didn't even know it. There's that hindsight again.

Ryah will relentlessly torture her older sister. At any given moment, you'll hear Peri sobbing and Ryah laughing at her. It's horrible. Ryah will take toys from Peri, while Peri chases after her yelling, "Give it back, Ryah! Give it back!" And there's Ryah, happily running away and just giggling. Peri hates loud sounds (which is Ryah in a nutshell) and at night, Ryah will scream at the top of her lungs, while Peri cries for her to stop, then Ryah will let out a hearty laugh and do it again. Seriously, she's a stinker. I have to roll my eyes when people say how cute she is. It's all for show. :oP

She's also a discipline problem, as I haven't yet figured out anything that works. She's the child that laughs while you punish her. She'll sit in timeout, but as soon as she's done her time, she's out and doing whatever it is again, that got her in there in the first place. I thought I would be doomed to wait until she's old enough to have things she cares about taken away.

And then she turned three.

So for Ryah's birthday (which was April 7th), we decided to take her to Red Robin for dinner then come home for cake and presents. We thought it would be fun to have the staff sing to her at dinner (plus we had to suffer it so many times, we thought everyone else should have to listen to the song again). They brought over the obligatory birthday balloon ears and she seemed kind of confused. Then they started singing.

Ryah put her head down and started shaking it. Then she looked up, slapped her hand to her face and continued shaking her head. She was embarrassed!! I had never seen that before! My three-year-old was being pubicly humiliated and I couldn't help but laugh. So that's it! All I have to do is take her to a public place and start singing Happy Birthday to her. When they were done, she was beat red. Of course, when we got home, we just had to sing again for her candles. And it happened again! Classic.

So there you have it, if you have a child, who doesn't respond to discipline, they may just need a loving dose of public humiliation. Apparently, it works! And it makes for great photos. Mwahahahahahaha. :o)

National Volunteer Week

Posted Thursday, April 08, 2010

National Volunteer week 2010 is April 18th-24th. Click on the link to go to the Hands On Network to learn more.

Volunteering is a great way to help out your community, and because of the internet we can also reach out a bit easier to help people around the United States and also even in other countries! There are SO many organizations who would love some help/donations, and here are just a few wonderful organizations to donate hand made items to (or even money if you can). If you are not crafty, look up some organizations in your local area (library, pet shelters, homeless shelters, hospitals, senior centers...) there are bound to be many places that you can volunteer at.

Dress A Girl Around The World - They take pillowcase dresses made by volunteers and distribute them to girls all around the world. They even give you a tutorial on their website on how to make the dresses. It is very easy! My 6 year old daughter can do it (with a little help from me)

Project Linus -
"Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to help us achieve our mission statement, which states:
First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”
Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
Together we have distributed over three million blankets to children in need since our inception in 1995."

Craft Hope - You can get involved in all kinds of charitable donations here. Craft Hope raised a lot of money to help out Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. They have many different projects in the works.

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep -From their website:
"The Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS) administers a network of more than 7,000 volunteer photographers in the United States and 25 countries. At a family's request, a NILMDTS Affiliated Photographer will come to your hospital or hospice location and conduct a sensitive and private portrait session. The portraits are then professionally retouched and presented to the families on an archival DVD or CD that can be used to print portraits of their cherished baby.
Our entire network of affiliated photographers graciously donate their time and talents to our families and we are proud to be able to offer our services at no cost. Your Donations are greatly needed and greatly appreciated."

The Preemie Project -  "The Preemie Project is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization that comforts premature and critically ill infants and their families at The University of Iowa Children’s Hospital by giving gifts of hats, booties and blankets that have been handcrafted by a devoted group of local and national volunteers. In addition, The Preemie Project offers solace to families who are grieving a loss by providing bereavement items such as handcrafted burial layettes and tokens of remembrance. The Preemie Project uses financial contributions to supply UI Children’s Hospital families in financial crisis with basic necessities such as diapers, toiletries and clothing."

This is just a very small sample of all of the wonderful organizations out there looking for help getting things to people in need. Please feel free to post your favorite charities in the comments!

No Girls Allowed

Posted Monday, April 05, 2010

I don't know about you, but when my husband and I decided to have kids, I had it all planned out. We were going to have two boys and if we were nuts, have a third and she would be a girl. All I knew was that I did NOT want to have girls. I even bought only boy clothes after we started trying.

Growing up, I was a complete wallflower, but minding my own business in the background did not save me from the cattiness of girls. In junior high, there were girls that would call other classmates, pretend to be me, and say who knows what (curse the era before caller id). I know it was bad because one of the boys that asked me about it, wouldn't tell me what "I" had said. In any event, I had more boy friends than girl friends because I just didn't want to deal with the drama of it all.

Yup, I was going to have boys and avoid reliving my teenage years, even vicariously. I should have known. Statistically, I thought we had a shot, I mean there is a 51% to 49% ratio of male to female births. However, I married into a family where the odds aren't quite so even. Between my husband and his two brothers, there are nine, count 'em NINE, girls and no boys. How is this even possible? I suspect a government experiment using their tap water growing up, but we'll never know. :oP It would be an interesting study though.

While I still wonder what having boys would be like, I do love my girls and it's made me realize that you don't get what you want, you get what you need. And perhaps I will relive my teenage years through my girls, but having gone through it, maybe I'll able to make theirs better. Or at the very least, a little less traumatic. Time will tell. :o)

Wall Art for Little Bedrooms

Posted Wednesday, March 31, 2010

At the slightest hint of Spring, the cleaning, de-cluttering, purging, rearranging, and redecorating side of me jumps into action, especially in the kids bedrooms - holy moly kids can cram a ton of stuff in their rooms, especially over the winter, [what's with that?]! Once their rooms are sparkling and orderly, the rearranging and redecorating begins! In our house, this kind of redecorating is more rearranging than redecorating, 'cause there isn’t much budget for “decorating.” So we move furniture around, add and subtract accessories from one room for another, turn sheets into curtains, and do all we can to make the room look totally fresh and different.

Art work is always something I struggle with in my kids rooms. I want something fun, creative and inspiring, but I also want it to work for my 3 year old or my 10 year old, and still work when they're 16. [I know I ask a lot for my $1]

The EtsyKids team has an amazing selection of “wall art.” Prints or original works in a variety of different themes, colors, sizes and prices. How fun to be able to add a new dimension to a child’s space with an original piece of art. Here are four to get your search started.

I'll be sharing more EtsyKids wall art over the coming weeks. Look for them on Wall Art Wednesdays.

5 Life Skills Every Kid Needs

Posted Saturday, March 27, 2010

I just finished reading a most interesting article in Parenting Magazine. I wanted share some snippets. If you'd like to read the entire article - it is from the April 2010 Issue called Parenting Early Years. You can read more at Parenting.com and also find them on twitter and FaceBook.

5 Skills Every Kid Needs

1. How to be a loser
~Not the good for nothing loser but how to loose at something and still be okay.
!Lead by example...Model being a good loser over and over.

2. How to be a joiner
~Not that your child should be indistinguishable from the flock, but knowing how to join in an activity or a preexisting group.
!Teach your child to recognize the 'friendly vibes' that certain kids in the group may be giving off. Eye contact...instead standing outside the circle and asking 'can I play' and not being heard by anyone. They should approach the child that is making eye contact and smiling.

3. How to fight for what's right
~Being the defender of someone lower on the social food chain than you is enormously scary- it can feel as though your entire social survival is at stake, which is why almost all kids need help to do so. Having both the confidence and the moral judgment to not only refuse to join in the teasing but also walk away or even better stand up for what's right.
!All this takes is basic conversation...kids instinctively know that its wrong to hurt someone elses feelings.

4. How to be a good actor
~Knowing which emotions to reveal and which ones are better kept under wraps, to be expressed later. It also means learning ho to be less than honest at times for the sake of others feelings. You will no doubt teach your child to say to his well meaning great aunt who didn't get him a Wii 'Thank you, I can really use these thermal tube socks'.
!This one is all about impulse control. You can teach them how to keep from blurting out by giving simple guidelines and steps.

5. How to question authority
~A kid who questions authority and manages to do so respectfully and effectively is a kid who will do well for himself in the long run.
!Kids question authority naturally - the key is to guide them on how to do it politely and on your end, say yes whenever possible

Spring Cleaning

Posted Wednesday, March 24, 2010

This is my first time posting here on the EtsyKids blog :)
My name is Liz, and I am a lucky mama with 4 great kids. I have 2 boys & 2 girls.

I was thinking that since Spring is finally here, I would do a post about spring cleaning. I have been doing a little bit everyday . It is a big job, but I am enjoying it! It is so nice to be able to open the windows and let some fresh air in after being cooped up all winter long. We have had such gorgeous sunny and warm days here in Maryland lately.

As I clean I keep thinking about what kinds of things really help out and cut my cleaning time down. With 4 kids and a move coming up I need all the help I can get! I try to use natural cleaners whenever possible. Here are a few things that I have found really work well. I hope that this helps you too and if you have any tips please post and share!

1. To clean out your microwave (mine gets so gross, it is not even funny) I put about 1/2 cup of white vinegar and about 1/2 cup of water into a glass bowl and put it inside the microwave and turn it on for about 2 minutes. Then you can take the bowl out (carefully! It is really hot) and just wipe out the yuck! I leave the door open for a little while so the vinegar smell can dissipate :)

2. To clean all the grease off of the hood of my stove (OMG I just discovered this yesterday!!) A  Magic Eraser (The Mr. Clean one) WORKS MIRACLES!! Oh my goodness, with a little bit of scrubbing that yucky grease came right off. Also works great on the stove top!

3. Laundry Stains are a pain, but if it is an organic stain, I swear by Bac Out from Bi-O-Kleen. It uses enzymes to naturally remove stains. I use it on my sons cloth diapers too and it works so well :)

4. Homemade natural cleaners are awesome, inexpensive any my favorite part is you can make them smell like whatever you want! Here is a neat website with all kinds of cleaning "recipes"

Anyway, thanks for stopping by! Please be sure and share your tips in the comments!
