But Whyyyyyy?

Posted Monday, November 16, 2009

I was well warned about the incessant questions stage of a preschooler's development. I also saw parents roll their eyes when talking about their own kids reaching that annoying little milestone. I knew about it, I expected it, but I always just shrugged it off and looked forward to answering my inquisitive little genius' questions.

I underestimated the stage greatly.

Gracie's questions have been going on for sometime now, but lately they have been fired fast and furiously. I was prepared for questions like, "Why is the sky blue," or "Why is the grass green?" But instead, Gracie leans more toward the ridiculous.

"Is that a girl? Is she a tink? Whats a tink? Is that boy a tink?"

-or-

"What time is is? Is it forty-thirty o'clock? Is it nuffernatter o'clock? Whats nuffernatter? Does that mean its bedtime? Is is bed time o'clock?

-or-

"Is that the color orange? Whats orange? Orange starts with G. Does orange start with G? Is orange a tink? Is it orange nuffernatter o'clock?"

And it goes on and on and on, all day and all night. So far, Gracie doesn't understand the rules to the "No Questions" game.

And of course, in perfect Gracie fashion, when my eyes are bugging out of my head and the veins are throbbing in my temple from the insanity of all the questions, she chooses to ask, "Do you love me, Mommy?"

Lucky for her, I do. Even with all the questions.

The turkey's in the oven...

Posted Sunday, November 15, 2009

My mother is a really great cook. Really good. I did not inherit this talent. Oh I've tried, I've really tried. Yet all who've been near agree: I did not inherit this talent. Nonetheless, each year I have grandiose visions of a turkey in the oven while my children are at play, and a family get together like none other. And each year as Thanksgiving approaches, I look around, at my children at play! and think this may not be the year. You know, the year TO LEARN HOW TO COOK ON A MAJOR HOLIDAY! :0 Yes, we've decided to give it another year, to keep practicing with smaller fare, and to cherish the family get together sans my homemade food. We're all be the better for it! HOWEVER, one thing I'm really good at is shopping. Yes, I realize that is surprising but I am really rather good at shopping. And I love to decorate! So, in honor of the turkey I will NOT cook this year, here are a few of my favorite EtsyKids Thanksgiving finds :)

Kids in the Kitchen

Posted Wednesday, November 11, 2009

With the last couple of weeks of pure candy bliss, I'm sure all the moms out there are ready for a healthy snack fix! No matter how hard I've tried to stop the candy stash from being devoured by my children (I'm sure that my husband helped with that too)...the pile keeps shrinking and they've been on a constant sugar high...bleh!

So today, I hope to share some yummy snacks that will help tackle the problem of the post-Halloween, icky teeth, yucky tummy, candy overload blues!

Cookie Magazine put together a list of 10 super healthy, yet totally yummy snacks for kids!

Try these out...have the kiddos help in the kitchen as you prepare them too!Healthy Trail Mix

How: Mix whole-wheat pretzels, wheat Chex, Craisins or raisins, chocolate chips, dried fruits, seeds, and nuts (optional) together.

Why: Kids love this sweet and crunchy mix of ingredients that's high in energy-boosting protein.

And how about....

Banana Pops

  • 3 bananas
  • 6 Popsicle sticks
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup chopped peanuts or walnuts, granola, crispy rice cereal, or sunflower seeds

How: Peel the bananas. Cut them in half, width wise, and push a Popsicle stick through the cut end of each half. Spread peanut butter on the bananas, and then roll them in the nuts, cereal, or seeds. Wrap them in waxed paper and freeze for three hours.

Why: A single pop contains 16 percent of the recommended daily dietary-fiber intake for an adult. The potassium content of the bananas can help reduce bloating in mom, while the peanut butter and nuts or seeds provide fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

*My Twist: dip them in dehydrated or dried fruits too! yum!
