Did Someone Say Park?

My husband has never taken me out on a date. That's right, never. We've gone out, yes, but hes never taken me anywhere. There's a big difference, right? There's probably at least one gal reading this, thinking "whats the big deal, why does he have to take you out?", and that's fine, really, some people probably don't see why it matters so much (I think I was one of them up until a week ago). But after being with somebody for five years, married to them for three of those, it matters. In a brief moment of selfishness, I decided I wanted to feel special, too. I voiced my opinion, in the form of an adult tantrum (we all have our moments), and then stomped off with my nose in a tissue. And you know what? It worked.

Last night while I was cleaning the counter, Cinderella style (that's what it felt like, at least), my husband asked me "what are your plans for tomorrow"? I thought nothing of it (the tantrum had been days ago, by the way), I just blabbed on and on, about "I have to work on binky leashes, put together a tutorial for the Dramalogues, I need to edit the kids 365's, other than that- oh wait, I wanted to bake some bagels too, but I guess I don't have to do that un-", he cut me off. "Because I was thinking we could go out". I didn't understand. I didn't say anything back. "I called Kristen, shes going to come over and watch the kids, and-", "REALLY?!" I shouted. My ridiculous childlike tantrum had worked?? My husband was going to take me out?!

We stood in the kitchen, leaning up against the counter, discussing where we'd go for our big night. His plans were, to take me to a movie, and then to this fancy martini bar downtown. Nice, right? As happy as I was that he had made plans for us (I was so excited that I was literally bouncing in place), I really just wanted to go get a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks? Kind of silly, I know. Last year I was "allergic" to them, or so I thought (long story there), and all I've been able to think about for the past week, is how badly I want to hold a hot cardboard mug in my hands and inhale the flavored steam as deeply into my nostrils as my nose will allow. He gave me a funny look, probably thinking 'are you serious?'. I asked him if he was mad (he said no), and then went on to encourage that if he really wanted to go see the movie and go to the martini bar (I just didn't think we'd really have anything to talk about while we were there, and it would be loud, and... ) that we could. We talked about going to the drive in, but nothing good was scheduled. I'm afraid of scary movies, and a romantic comedy doesn't seem like something I'd want to waste my once-in-a-lifetime big date night on. When I stopped to think about it, I really just wanted to get a coffee and go sit on a bench at the park with him, like we used to do. Before kids, before the military, before Texas. We used to get coffee and go to the park in Portland all the time. And when I said this out loud...

"DID SOMEBODY SAY PARK?!", Eleanore screamed from the living room? "DID SOMEBODY SAY PARK?!", she screamed again, when there was no immediate response. She jumped up, ran across the floor, skidded to a stop on the hard woods in front of the kitchen, and one more time, yelled "DID SOMEBODY SAY PARK?!"

By now Christopher and I were bent over holding our stomachs, laughing. Of course, of course, the one serious, and honestly quite romantic, conversation that we were having (no arguing involved) in decades, would be interrupted by a three year old eavesdropping and exploding into a playground induced seizure of excitement.

Yes Eleanore, somebody said park. And for the first time in your 3 years of beautiful life, Mommy and Daddy are going without you. And we're taking pumpkin spice lattes, drenched in whip cream.

Featured Shop: Planet Pudge

Posted Thursday, October 15, 2009

Today I thought whatever the first listing that comes up under an 'etsykids' search is the lucky person that will be the featured shop this week and I must say I am delighted to find planet pudge as that listing.
Planet Pudge is an out-of-this-world planet filled with hand-embroidered tees & hoodies guaranteed to be the holiday gift that keeps on getting compliments and the tee your little one refuses to take off.
The result of an over-caffeinated, creative-deprived mom in search of fun, unique, modern clothes for her two little girls. Sick of the same old mass-produced stuff, she started fanatically drawing, cutting, obsessing over fabrics and hand-stitching everything (much to the dismay of her calloused middle finger). Many "where did you get that"'s later, Planet Pudge was born. A bouncing baby brand that offers a wide array of colorful American Apparel tees, tanks and hoodies both great (up to size 12) and small. Every Planet Pudge creation is one-of-a-kind, just like your mommy-worshiping, caterpillar-smooshing, homework-defying kid.
Shipping is available with all items shipping within one week.
I just love it all and might have to start christmas shopping right here!

So adorable...enjoy!

Kids in the Kitchen - Halloween Art Project!

Posted Monday, October 12, 2009

Posted with permission. Original blog post by Make and Takes on 10/12/09.

Halloween is a fun time to give a ghostly gift with terrorific treats. We’re wrapping up this painted cellophane to give to some of our neighbors and friends, sharing some holiday fun.

Painted Halloween Cellophane

Supplies for Painted Gift Wrap:

  • cellophane wrapping – cut into 24 inch square sheets
  • craft paint – Halloween colors
  • paper plate
  • sponges, paint brushes
  • ribbon
  • treats

Painted Gift Wrap Supplies

Lay out your cellophane sheet on the table. Apply a tablespoon or so of paint onto the paper plate. Using your sponge or paint brush, paint onto the cellophane. You can simply make fun circles with Halloween colors or do some Halloween designs. My daughter had fun just painting all over.

Painted Gift Wrap Paint

Here I made some fun Halloween shapes. I painted white ghosts with a black face and orange pumpkins with green stems and a few jack-o-lantern faces.

Painted Gift Wrap GhostsPainted Gift Wrap Pumpkins

Allow these to dry, it shouldn’t take more than an hour if your paint isn’t too thick. Once the paint is dry, place some treats in the center of the cellophane (with the painted side out) and wrap it all up, attaching a ribbon to close up the top. Have fun painting and gift giving these for Halloween.

Creating a Moment of Zen

You may find this hard to believe, but I used to be one well put together cookie. Before kids, even before marriage, I was organized, sharp and well rested. Now I’m as organized as the city dump, as sharp as a spoon and I might as well blame it on the fact that I haven’t slept in five years. My life is chaotic and I feel like I’m grasping at something, anything, that will help keep it all in check. Or at the very least, give me a few moments of Zen.

Some may call me a control freak, but if I don’t have control over my life, then who has the reigns if I don’t? So, in an effort to get things back on track, I’m trying to lose weight to be in control of my body, sorting through the clutter to keep the house under control and get back into doing the things that I love so that the part that makes me me is not on the back burner. I’m more than a wife and a mother, I’m still me. And that person likes to be fit, organized and in control of her life.

I’ve started to sort through all of our belongings and have begun to purge. And I must say that once something leaves this house, never to return, it is incredibly satisfying and I feel like I’ve accomplished a great feat. Also, now it’s someone else’s clutter and not mine. Neener neener. :oP If you haven’t discovered it yet, you should check out Freecycle.org. It’s a Yahoo Group and you sign up for specific to your county. Members list items they are getting rid of, need or want. Just email the person and schedule a pick up. And since it’s free, you can always leave the items on your porch and not even be disturbed when someone comes to claim the item(s). I’ve found quite a few things I wanted/needed and have gotten rid of plenty. It’s a wonderful resource. One man’s trash is another’s treasure.

I’m also participating in a huge children’s consignment sale, starting next weekend. Take all of your old, good used condition baby items, tag them with a price and take them over. Do NOT hold onto baby items unless you’re planning to have another one in a year or two. Of course, keep the staples like the crib and primo stroller you love, but get rid of those baby clothes! If you do decide to have another child a few years from now, the odds are, the clothing you currently have you either won’t like or it’s out of style. So Freecycle the items that are stained or not worth selling and make a few dollars to add to your rainy day fund with the rest. Think of all of the extra storage space you’ll free up.

If you’re house looks anything like mine, you’ve “binged” on things for years and never purged and now it appears to be a daunting task. But it’s not hopeless, I promise. Pick something small, like the hall closet, the tote of baby things or the junk drawer in the kitchen. Spend an hour going through it and getting rid of the things you no longer use/need then organizing it so that the things you are keeping are easy to find. If you don’t remember the last time you used it, you don’t need it. Then don’t wait to get rid of the things you don’t need, just list them, take them to Salvation Army, whatever. You haven’t accomplished anything until they’re gone and you’re missing out on the gratifying Zen moment.

It doesn’t sound like much, but do the closet today, the bathroom tomorrow, the pantry the next day, etc. Eventually, you’ll have cleared out so much stuff, it will almost feel metaphoric. You’ll weed out the clutter from your life, so that all that’s left is the necessities, organization and maybe a hint of your former, put together, self. And that’s definitely worth the effort.

It came!

Your "Friend" Card Has Been Revoked

Posted Monday, October 05, 2009

I'm on notice and have been informed that...SweetPea is no longer my friend. Well, for about 10 minutes the other day, anyway. I can only imagine she picked up that gem of a phrase at school. It's certainly nothing we would say here at home and there isn't a show I can think of on TV that I'd let her watch that would use it either. Regardless of where she heard it...I was on the receiving end of it. What inspired her to revoke the friend privilege? If I remember correctly, SweetPea was playing learning games on the computer and I told her that she'd had enough and that she needed to find something else to play with. Clearly that wasn't a popular decision. To be honest, it's not the first time she's told me "Mommy, you're not my friend". That honor came when I told her that I couldn't take her to China. Am I a mean mom or what?

After the first time, I tried to tell her she wasn't being very nice and that it hurt my feelings when she told me that she didn't want to be my friend. I told her that I loved HER and that sometimes, even though she might do something that didn't make me happy, that I'd always be her friend. I'll admit, that first time, it did hurt my feelings, if just a little, even though I understood that she was saying it because she was angry that I told her no. Eventually she apologized and told me that I was "still her friend". I thought the lesson was learned...until the other day we had a repeat performance...and not only did she tell me that she wasn't my friend, but she rambled off a list of people who WERE her friends...but not me..."Lil Buddy's my friend...Baby Rosa (her teddy bear) is my friend...Queen Narissa (her stuffed, purple dragon) is my friend...Maw Maw is my friend...Grammy is my friend...but you aren't my friend". This time, I had to keep myself from laughing. I don't know why, but it was funny. So again...we have the talk. This time she doesn't say much, but about 5 minutes later she begs me to help her with something and I shoot back "well, you know, if I was your friend, I'd help, but since I'm not your friend, I'm not sure why you'd want me to help you." Voila...we're friends again.

At the end of the day, I know that what she's trying to tell me is that she's not happy about something I've told her. Obviously, saying "no" isn't always going to be popular, but it is a necessary evil. The funny thing...I think it's finally setting in. Yesterday afternoon, SweetPea was getting very frustrated that something wasn't working right for her and she asked me for help...then got mad that what I did to help was NOT what she wanted me to do...she threw a mini fit and I sent her to her room...which of course made her REALLY mad. When I went to talk to her in her room she told me "Mommy, you made me very upset and I'm sad"...which in the long run, is what I think she meant all along by "you're not my friend anymore". And to think...we still have the teenage years...UGH!

It Really Does Make a Difference...

Posted Saturday, October 03, 2009

OK - so we all know I work full time so every day of the week, im up before the sun, showered, hair, bla bla - then off to work so on the weekends Im afraid Im a bit of a slob - I usually stay in my pjs all day unless we're going somewhere and I sludge around both days like flunkie - but I thought that I needed a break from the day to day routine BUT OMG - I read 2 articles in the past month and the women talked about getting up and dressed just like they do on the weekdays -and what a difference it makes in their productivity - so last weekend I tried and it's incredible the difference in how I felt all weekend - I made so many dresses last weekend it was unreal. I'm doing the same this weekend, but I've got appointments everywhere - so I'm not sure Ill get a lot of sewing done BUT I feel GREAT! If you doubt it - try it!....unless I was the only one not doing it....sheesh! LOL!

What to Do When Baby Has a Chesty Cough...

Posted Monday, September 28, 2009

I know, I know. Isn't that the saddest thing you've ever seen? (It gets better, I promise)

When my daughter (who is now 3) was a baby, I took her to the doctor for everything. And if the doctor's office wasn't open, I took her to the ER. We've spent at least 10 nights camped out in an emergency room waiting area for no reason at all. At the time, I would have argued that she needed to be there, something was very wrong, she was going to die! Now being a Mother of two, I can see where I went wrong. I think part of it was hormonal, honestly, but the rest of it, was I just didn't know any better.

Little Charlie came down with a runny nose the other day. When I got him out of bed, his nostrils were crusted over, his whimper was congested, and his eyes had a solid ring of pink around them. "Awww, noooo, Mommy got you sick", I pouted. When we cozied up on the couch for breakfast, poor baby cried every time he got a good latch. He couldn't breathe through his nose at all, making meal time a wide awake nightmare. We dealt with it, suffering through the day together, and eventually the sniffle simmered and the smiles returned.

Or so we thought.

Instead of draining out of his nose, it was draining down his throat. Of course, right? Dangit.

A day later, he was projecting a chesty cough that sent echoes bouncing from the floors to the ceiling. I plugged in the vaporizer near his play mat, and hoped for the best. Later that night when he went down for a nap, since he hadn't slept all day, there was the cough again. Louder than before, and bad enough to wake him up after his 5 minutes of peaceful slumber. Somehow the cough, that a day earlier had just been a sniffle, had turned into an awful miserable hacking. It was too late to take him to a doctor, and I knew that even if I did, they wouldn't be able to do anything for us. Not, a dang, thing.

I did what came natural. I hopped onto Twitter (I'm @TiaColleen if you want to be friends, *waves*) and asked for help. All of my lady friends were a huge help, not only showing concern for grumpy bear and support for a tired Mama, but they offered up some really great advice that came in really handy, and eventually did the trick! Man, I don't know what I'd do without the Internet sometimes, ya know?

So the whole point of this blog post, is to help another Mother out there, who maybe doesn't know what to do for her baby with a chesty cough. I am by no means a doctor, and always always trust your gut instinct. If you feel like your baby needs to see a doctor, or go to the ER, take her. These are just suggestions that have personally helped me (and others) when help was needed.

Things to do when your baby has a chesty cough (or just isn't feeling well):

-Humidify and vaporize. If you have a humidifier, clean off the dust, fill it with fresh water, and plug that thing in! If you can't afford an expensive one (and really, who can?), Vick's makes a cheapy that works extremely well, something like $12. You can get it at Walmart, Target, all of those drug store type places. We use that one more than we use our larger less affordable model.

-Put baby into a steam room. Take baby with you into the bathroom, close the door behind you, and with baby nowhere near (seriously, we're not trying to burn the baby here) the tub/shower, turn the shower part on as hot as the knobs will allow. Let the room turn into a sauna. Its uncomfortable, you'll start to get sweat and your skin will get sticky, but its what baby needs it (and really, you know you probably need it too). Strip baby down to nakedness, tickle his tummy, give him some raspberries, and before you know it, the mirror will be completely fogged up (write redrum with your finger, draw smileys, mess it all up, because you know you can't resist), and you'll be ready to put baby into a warm bath. Adjust the water temperature, fill up a bath for baby like you normally would, and hang out in there as long as you can possibly stand it.

-Pat baby on the back, almost like you're burping her, but this time you're patting her to loosen up the lung clogging gunk. Someone told me that this worked best after baby gets out of the steam room, and I agree. However, you can do this at any time, and it would probably still be effective.

-I got an email last year from my husband's Nana, something about putting Vick's Vapor Rub on baby's feet, and then covering his feet with socks. She said that my Sister in Law had tried it, and that it had worked for her. Well... if you've got some in the closet, its worth a shot, right? As soon as we pulled baby out of the steam bath, we loaded up Charlie's feet with a few swipes of the stinky stuff (stinky in a good way), and then put his footy pajamas on.

-Baby Vick's Vapor Rub. I read the back of the adult Vick's, and the jar states that it can be used on children ages 2 and older, and it when it comes to medicines, you can never be too careful. My neighbor just happened to be going to the store to pick up some allergy meds for her little girl, and she was nice enough to pick up a jar of Baby Vick's for us. When Charlie woke up for his midnight feeding, we put a little bit on his chest. Maybe write that down on your shopping list right now while you're thinking about it, so you don't find yourself making a trip to the store at 11pm?

-Elevate baby. My Twitter Mama friends suggested using a Boppy pillow, or even putting books underneath one end of baby's crib. I never used a Boppy pillow, so we didn't have that option, but we do have books. Good tip! Christopher went out into the garage and found some books right away, and put them under Charlie's bed legs.

-Hydrate your baby. If your baby will take water or juice, great. Mine won't, haha. If you're a breastfeeding or formula feeding Mama, don't be afraid to offer baby an extra round or two of milk. Normally I try to offer Charlie solid food in between breast meals, but while he was sick I gave him all the breast he could stand. And what really surprised me, was there was no spit up, which means he needed it. The more fluids you can give your baby while he's sick, the better. Drink up little one!

Alright, so we did all of those things combined, and our sad faced baby (remember the picture from earlier?) actually got some sleep.

I told you it got better, didn't I? ;o)

Sibling Rivalry...

Posted Saturday, September 26, 2009

...irritating, yes. But sib squabbles are dress rehearsals for life.

(this is a snippet from an article in Better Homes and Gardens October 09 Issue p.262)

Siblings are the best and worst of friends during childhood, which is right on psychologically-their sole purpose is to gain a parent's attention, and irking a sib is often the way to do it.

I hated when my mother refused to get involved in our spats. "Work it out," she'd say. "I don't' want to hear about it."
But my mom was right. That conflict resolution she forced us to learn not only taught us to navigate relationships, it made us the best of friends as adults.

Many experts say parents shouldn't try to eliminate it as much as moderate it. "Sibling rivalry is a dress rehearsal for life," says Elaine Fantle Shimberg, the Tampa Author of Blending Families and mother of five..You have to learn to communicate and you have to make compromises."

Think before stepping in. "Parents, wishing only to see their kids smiling, sometimes hijack the process," says Chicago psychologist Aaron Cooper, author of I just want my kids to be happy! Why you shouldn't' say it, why you shouldn't think it, what you should embrace instead. They mix in when sibs bicker or fight, thinking it's the way to promote peace. In fact, it backfires much of the time."

Kids in the Kitchen - Halloween Treats

Posted Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Well, Halloween is just around the corner! Ooooo....spooooooky!

I love this time of year...the weather is pleasantly brisk, the smell of hot apple cider is wafting from the kitchen...mmmmm...pure bliss! This is also about the time that I start thinking about what kind of treats I'm going to make for everyone - my children's classmates, my friends and family members - like I said...it's my favorite time of year - I hand goodies out to everyone! Plus, my daughter's birthday is the day before Halloween, so right about now is when we start planning for a fantastic costume birthday party - and of course, we have a table loaded with treats there too!

I'm always looking for some fun treats to make - something totally SpOoKtAcUlAr! During the next few weeks, I'll try to bring you some fun - and totally ghoulish - treats that you too can make for your Halloween festivities!

Enjoy!

"Dirty" Popcorn Balls

Perfect for a Halloween party, these dressed-up popcorn balls can be made in advance, or let the kids make them during the party. If using microwave popcorn, choose a low-salt or salt-free variety.

Ingredients:

12 cups popped corn (about one 6-oz. package microwave popcorn)

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter

4 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows

1/2 cup chocolate cookie crumbs

4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder

16 gummi worms (about 6 oz.)

Directions:

Pour the popcorn into a large bowl. Set aside.
In a large microwave-safe bowl, microwave the butter on High until melted, about 45 seconds. Add the marshmallows and stir to coat. Microwave on High until the marshmallows start to melt and look puffy, about 1 1/2 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a shallow bowl, combine the cookie crumbs and cocoa powder and toss to mix. Set aside.
Stir together the melted marshmallows and butter until smooth. Pour the warm marshmallow mixture over the popcorn and stir to coat the popcorn evenly.
Using well-buttered hands, scoop up a handful of the popcorn and shape into a baseball-size ball, pressing firmly. Pull apart 2 openings in the ball and place a gummi worm inside each opening, letting the worms' heads and some parts of their bodies peek through. Close the ball and press firmly to seal the worms inside. Repeat with the remaining popcorn and worms. Roll the balls in the cookie-crumb mixture until roughly coated.

Eat immediately, or wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap and store at room temperature for up to 2 days. Makes 8 popcorn balls.

Preparation Tip: To mash the cookies for the dirt, place whole chocolate cookies in a sturdy sealable plastic bag and press them with the back of a spoon.

Candy Corn Variation: Skip the cookie crumbs and gummi worms. Tint the melted marshmallow mixture with orange food coloring. Mix a big handful of candy corn into the popcorn with the marshmallow mixture and form into balls as directed.

An Interview With a 3.5 Year Old

Posted Monday, September 21, 2009

I saw this interview and thought it would be fun to try out on Gracie, which I did back in April. It doesn't matter how old your little kiddo is, as long as they are of talking age. So go on and try these questions out on them! You'll be laughing at their answers, to be sure!

My interview with Gracie:

1. What is something mom always says to you?
Don't run away

2. What makes Mom happy?

Being a good listener

3. What makes Mom sad?

Bedtime and naptime

(oh, yeah right!)

4. How does your mom make you laugh?

From making silly faces

5. What was your mom like as a child?

Like a baby

6. How old is your mom?

This many (holds up five fingers)

I'm five?

Yeah. Five

7. How tall is your mom?

Like a giant

(seriously, I'm 5'2'' and the shortest person in my family, including my 13 year old cousin)

8. What is her favorite thing to do?

Play with me

9. What does your mom do when you're not around?

Play with my toys

(um.... no)

10. What is your Mom very good at?

Drawing

11. If Mom became famous what would it be for?

{Gracie begins to cry}

Why are you crying?

Because I don't want you to be famous! I want you to be my mommy!

Gracie, seriously. Stop crying. If I went on TV, what do you think I'd be doing.

Being on a cooking show

(for what, making macaroni and cheese and chicken nuggets?)

12. What is your mom not very good at?

Not good at doing the alphabet

13. What does your mom do for her job?

Work with Angie

(Angie is the gal who does my prints, and one of Gracie's favorite people)

14. What is your mom's favorite food?

Spaghetti

(It really isn't. We just eat spaghetti all the time because it is quick and cheap)

15. What makes you proud of your mom?

Taking a shower

(exactly what is she trying to say here?)

16. If your mom were a cartoon character, who would she be?

Ariel

(she’s right, I would choose Ariel)

17. What do you and your mom do together?

Play tag and paint

18. How are you and your mom the same?

Because we have hair

19. How are you and your mom different?

Because we are different than penguins

20. How do you know your mom loves you?
