One rainy day my sister came for a visit and while looking for something to do, we came across this recipe for baby lotion body paint! Since I still have 4 bottles of baby lotion from my baby shower (3 years ago) I though it was the perfect paint to make!

After School Snack:: Chocolate Chip Muffins

Posted Saturday, September 08, 2012

I've had some super hungry kids coming home from school this week.  Super hungry.  It surprises them and me how much they grow over the summer.  What they took in K/3rd/5th/6th grade isn't always enough to carry them through 1st/4th/6th/7th grade.  So we've been adjusting the menu options, boosting the nutritional value of what they take and making sure they are packing enough to sustain them.  But my brood still needs a little something when they come home from school to tide them over through homework and me making dinner.

This muffin recipe is one I haven't used in years, and my kids are so glad I pulled it out this week and made it.  In the time it took everyone to unload backpacks, lunch boxes and put everything away, I had these mixed up and in the oven.  They are quick, simple and make a small enough batch that you're in and out in 30 minutes.  Perfect for an occasional after school snack.

Chocolate Chip Muffins
2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup whole milk (skim -2% also works)
6 tablespoons butter – melted and cooled (I needed to substitute oil here & it worked!)
2 eggs – beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup mini chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line muffin pan with papers

Sift flour, sugars, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, stir together milk, eggs, butter and vanilla until blended. Make a well in center of dry ingredients: add milk, mixture and stir just to combined. Stir in chocolate chips.

Spoon batter into muffin cups; bake 15-17 minutes, or until knife inserted in center of one muffin comes out clean. Remove muffin tin to wire rack: cool 5 minutes and remove from tins to finish cooling.

Makes a dozen beautifully full muffins.

If a dozen muffins is more than your family needs as an after school snack, consider making half the batch into mini muffins to include in lunches.  Or bag up the left overs to use for breakfast.  They also freeze well so you can freeze extras to use later in the month.

National Sewing Month:: Handmade Quilts

Posted Friday, September 07, 2012

September is National Sewing Month, and with sewing being a favorite medium of EtsyKids Team Members, we want to share a special month long series sponsored by EtsyKids Team Member, Heather of theSewingLoft.  Throughout the month, talented sewers -  quilters, garment makers, fiber artists and crafter's will be stopping by theSewingLoft blog and sharing their favorite sewing tool.  So far,  Amy of The Quilt AllianceBecky of PatchworkPosses and Janelle of TrashN2Tees have shared their favorite tools along with amazing projects to help us practice using their favorite tool and get a good feel for why they use it all the time.

The EtsyKids Team is filled with hundreds of talented artists and crafters, many of whom are sewers.  We hope to inspire you with their creative talent this month as we periodically showcase the beauty, versatility and quality of the sewn products our members have to offer.  We also hope Heather's special series for National Sewing Month, will inspire you to sew ... for the first time, on a new or forgotten project, or branch out and try something completely new in the world of sewing.

Introducing Wood Pond Design

Posted Thursday, July 26, 2012

Today We Introduce You to Jennifer from Wood Pond Designs

Q: What motivated you to start your shop?
I started my shop while I was a stay-at-home mom. My friend Joanna turned me on to Etsy. I was so inspired by all the wonderful things people were making. I was motivated by wanting to contribute financially to the family and by having something to call my own.

Q: What is the story behind your shop name?
My shop is named for the street I lived on when I started my shop. I wanted a shop name that was neutral enough to allow me to create a variety of items.

Q: Do you have a favorite Etsy Shop (non-child related)?
Oh my, I have so many favorite shops. I purchase lots of fabric on Etsy and one of my favorite shops is SewFreshFabrics. I also love block printing and two of my favorites are Oh Little Rabbit, and Madderroot. I have also been coveting the lovely pottery made by Whitney Smith Pottery.

Q: What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
The amount of time you can spend on non-productive things like research, forums, shop stats, google analytics, views, likes, posting photos, etc. I had to learn to focus my time and energy into creating instead. I have a sketch book where I draw ideas of what to make next, or how to expand upon ideas and items I’m already making. I put more time into making fewer things better. I also found the need for really good photos to be a challenge. I have used some techniques I learned early on, but there is always room for improvement.

Q: What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?Finding the right balance between my day job, my family life and carving out time to create and run my shop.

Q: What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
My personal philosophy is to provide my customers with a unique high quality handmade item that is made with love and delivered promptly and with personality. The reason Etsy is so wonderful it that I have the opportunity to provide a little bit of me into everything I make and I love sharing that!

Q: How would someone (other then you) describe you?
Energetic, silly, fun, talkative.

Q: What music do you have on while you are creating?
Mostly it’s quiet when I’m working, mostly because I don’t have a set-up in my work space to hook up my iPod. Often times my children come in to help create with me or just to hang out.

Q: What do you do when you aren't working?
When I’m not working in my ‘shop’, I am the registrar for a public school district. I also enjoy cooking, redecorating my new old house, and being outdoors.

Q: Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I have enjoyed being part of the EtsyKids Team and am grateful for the volunteers we have as well as for the network connection and friendships I’ve made.

FOBulous Key Fobs

Posted Wednesday, June 27, 2012

SquishyBee
Key Fobs, do you have one yet?  No longer are they just sold in college town gift shops embroidered with Greek letters, now they can be found in hundreds of different colors, styles and patterns.  More versatile than a traditional key chain, these fobs make it easy to find your keys in a large bag, tote, purse or backpack.  Slip one on the handle of your suitcase for instant recognition at baggage claim.  Wear it like a bracelet to keep bulky keys out of pockets and close at hand or when both hands are needed.  Fobs are made from 1-1/4 wide cotton webbing and embellished with beautiful, stylish fabrics and are machine washable!

Finding the Perfect Sibling Outfits

Posted Monday, June 25, 2012

From Salinda of PersonalilTy, Southern Children's Clothing

Why do Moms love to dress their children alike? Who knows, but obviously, this is not a new phenomenon. My Momma dressed us alike on occasion, and yours probably did too.

With the summer here, many families are planning sibling outfits for vacations, family reunions, weddings and of course, planning the annual holiday card photo.

SweetThreadsClothing
Shopping for girls is easy.  Shopping for boys, can be easy -  if you know where to look!  Mixed gender can be tricky, but finding a shop and seamstress that does custom work helps immensely!

But, what do you do when your children range from newborn to 12???

PersonaliTyChildren

Here’s an idea. Work for coordinating outfits instead. Put the baby in a seersucker jumper. Match big brother’s shirt to the jumper applique and add a seersucker touch. Finish off the set with a seersucker flower headband for big sister to wear with a white shirt and khaki shorts.

Another idea: Put the baby in a fun print. Find big brother a polo one of the colors from the baby’s dress. Big sister can add color with a bright scarf over her favorite white tee.

Etsy is an excellent source for coordinating accessories. Here are few of my favorites from EtsyKids Team members:

Work with your seamstress to develop the perfect color scheme for your growing family’s portraits to create a unique and totally personalized look the whole family will be happy with.

PersonaliTy Southern Children's Clothing can be found on Facebook, Twitter, her Blog, and of course on Etsy at her shop:
