Thank you letter printable

Posted Saturday, December 24, 2011

Courtesy of Steffi of Toastie Studio

I have to admit I am terrible at sending out thank you cards after Christmas. Half the time I send them out so late I should just ring and say thank you.
This year I saw in the shops some thank you cards for kids and knew I wanted to design my own. I think having a fun design and letter format can make writing thank you letters more fun for kids! So here are two designs for a thank you printable.
You get two letters per sheet of paper. Simply print at 100% scale and trim down.

I also have other thank you card printables in my etsy shop, including ones like this where you can design the character and colour scheme yourself.

Easy Holiday Truffles

Posted Friday, December 23, 2011

I love making sweets during the holidays, and this year, I decided to make mostly truffles and cake pops. I’ll be starting with these recipes, which are two of my favorites: Oreo Truffles and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles. Add a lollipop stick for a fun treat!

Oreo Truffles
This recipe comes from a friend in my MOMS Club. Super, super easy. Start them now, and they’ll be ready to eat in just a couple of hours.

16 oz. package of Oreo cookies, crushed in food processor (or in a Ziploc bag with a wooden spoon)
8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened

Mix the cookies and cream cheese together. Form into balls (I used a melon baller for size), and place on wax paper on a cookie sheet. Freeze until set. (I left mine in about two hours.)

Melt chocolate (white or semisweet), and dip the frozen truffles into the chocolate. While the chocolate is still soft, decorate with sprinkles, colored sugar, etc. – a great way for kids to help out!

Cookie Dough Truffles
This recipe comes from Spare Time Baker, the blog of a talented baker friend. I recently started following her on Pinterest, and the baked goods she shares there are just sinful! These truffles are always a hit, and my son loves them because I let him try the raw cookie dough. No eggs!

1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2- 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1-1/2 pounds semisweet chocolate candy coating, chopped

Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add flour, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla; mix well. Stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts, if using. Shape into 1-inch balls; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Loosely cover and freeze for 1-2 hours or until firm. (The dough softens quickly at room temperature so it works best if they are frozen, not just chilled in the refrigerator.)

In a microwave safe bowl, melt candy coating, stirring often until smooth. Dip balls in coating; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes. If desired, melt remaining candy coating and drizzle over candies. Store in refrigerator, not that they’ll last that long!

(Thanks to my friend WB for this awesome photo.)

Now, try to limit yourself to just one. Or two.

Happy holidays!

Eco-Friendly Gift Wrap

Posted Thursday, December 22, 2011

Courtesy of Danni of Alphabet Emporium.

How many rolls of wrapping paper do you have stashed in the back corner of the closet, or in a plastic tub under the bed?  Birthday, baby shower, wedding and holiday paper - a different roll for each event, each theme.  It's expensive and not all city recycling centers will take glossy gift wrap.

EtsyKids Team member, Alphabet Emporium, has a couple of simple, genius ways to wrap packages with eco-friendly supplies; many you can put into practice this holiday season.

  1. Use 100% recycled butcher paper (craft paper).   It works for every occasion, is totally gender neutral, and a 200 yard roll wraps a lot of packages!  At $6 a roll (hardware section of your local Wal-mart), it's hard to find anything more economical.  Butcher paper is a great eco-friendly alternative to wrapping paper and is very versatile, creating a beautiful canvas for Christmas wrapping.

Have your children help you decorate the presents by coloring or painting the paper.  Embellish the boxes by splurging on gorgeous ribbon, using wide strips of burlap or fabric, or multiple strands of string or yarn.   In lieu of gift tags, stamp the recipients initials or name all over their boxes.
  2. Not everything comes in a box, or fits in a box, and for those items gift bags are essential.  If you want to be extra eco-conscious, buy material from the local craft store and sew draw string bags to use over and over again.  I stamped bags with the numbers 1-25 and place some of the bags on the tree as decorations.
  3. I like to embellish my gifts with gifts, a kind of teaser that will get the recipient excited about what's inside.  So if the gift is a cookbook, buy a set of measuring spoons and string them through the ribbon you are using to embellish the box.  Or say it's a gift for someone who likes to sew; you can buy a measuring tape and use the actual measuring tape as ribbon.  For my son (see packages wrapped in picture above) I used an infinity scarf (middle package - red) I made, a mask (top left), my daughter get's hair accessories (top right) and some felt food (middle - red strawberries).  There are endless ways to embellish gifts with little gifts, and with a little forethought and a pinch of imagination, you'll come up with the perfect little addition.
When done simply and done well, eco-friendly gift wrap is a chic way to personalize each gift you are giving in an extra special and individualized way with being easy on the pocket book and the environment.  It's that extra step that makes a difference.

A huge thanks to Danni of AlphabetEmporium for sharing her tips with us.  You can find Danni after the holidays on Etsy at AlphabetEmporium and on facebook.

3 Simple Holiday Crafts From 1 Snowflake Punch!

Posted Friday, December 16, 2011

Shared by: Nikki, In Stitches

Christmas is coming...fast.

Faster than I think I'm ready for!

And if you're like me, you're starting to realize you have way too many things to do, and not nearly enough time to get them all done.

This is crunch time!

Time to keep things simple. Time to get the most out of every minute.

The kiddos and I sat down earlier this week with a pile of scrap paper and a few yards of ribbon, some glitter paint, and a Martha Stewart Snowflake paper punch. Less than 45 minutes later, we had three projects complete...and that's what I call getting the most of every minute!

We decorated our ornament tree.

We made garland and draped it around the trees on our front porch.

And we made super cute ornaments, that could also double as the perfect "little something extra" to embellish your gift wrapping...all from that pile of scraps and one punch!
I'm sharing the super simple how-to's for the ornament tree and garland on All Things For Mom today, here. Stop by and take a peek!

The snowflake ornament how-to is below!

Enjoy,

Nikki, In Stitches

Materials:

*3/8" wide ribbon

*Scrapbook paper

*Glitter paint and paint brush (optional)

*Snowflake paper punch (The one I used is from Martha Stewart...and is probably on sale in your local large chain craft store right now!)

*Needle and thread

Directions:

1. Cut ribbon into 6" lengths. Fold over approximately 1 1/2" and use needle and thread to tack into place, creating a loop to hang your ornament.

2. Punch 5 snowflakes for each ornament. (We painted a few pieces of paper with glitter paint first. It's fun for the kiddos to just glob the paint on, and the brush strokes will dry clear! Just make sure your paper is completely dry before you punch your snowflakes!)

3. Use the needle and thread to attach your snowflakes to the ribbon!

PS...There's still time for more handmade holiday projects! Find even more inspiration in my ebook, Nikki, In Stitches - A Handmade Holiday! Here's a little peek at what's inside!

Christmas Star Tutorial

Posted Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Post Shared by: Juny and Milo

My grandmother Teresina celebrated her 90th Birthday on December 6 and is probably one of the eldest EtsyKids Team fans. Having been an avid crafter for all her life and loving kids, she likes to browse the EtsyKids-Blog with me every time.

Because of her age and her hands not being as good as they have been, we’ve had to adapt our own crafting a bit and make it easier. For Christmas in the past years, we have always made paper stars, big and small, which we used to decorate just about everything.

This is my grandmother’s favorite model, which she is happy to share with the EtsyKids community. We never found out who the inventor of the star was, we learned it from a friend of ours who had noted it down on a piece of paper. It looks great, yet is very easy to make on your own or with the kids. Made in a big size it adorns walls, in smaller versions it makes a Christmas tree decoration, it can be used for garlands, and once, instead of paper we used plastic sheets and then sprayed the star with silver glitter for an outdoor decoration. It also looks beautiful crafted in felt.

I have included a step-by-step tutorial for you with photos, just follow the link. The star may look tricky, but after the first element you’ll continue making them in your sleep. It’s almost as relaxing as knitting.

The candy cane version is made using red and white striped paper, so simple, yet it looks cheery and festive.

Wishing you all a warm, happy and joyful Holiday Season,

Teresina, the grandmother

10 Reasons You Should Buy Handmade this Holiday

Posted Saturday, November 12, 2011

Article submitted by StoryBuilderToys

With the holiday shopping season fast approaching (most retailers already have their Christmas items on the shelves) it’s time to start planning your holiday shopping lists. This year why not be adventurous and try buying some handmade products for the ones you love? Why should you buy handmade instead of the usual store bought products you’re used to, well I’m glad you asked. Here are ten reasons why you should shop handmade for the holidays.
Floppy Bunny by StoryBuilderToys

  1. Be original. Handmade products are usually one of a kind or produced in small batches so you don’t have to worry about gifting something the person already has or giving the same gift as someone else. Instead you’ll be able to find something just as unique as the person you’re shopping for and nothing brings a smile to someone’s face better than knowing you really cared enough to find them the perfect gift.
  2. Support people, not companies. By giving your business to local artists and crafters you’re helping build a better economy without lining the pockets of overpriced corporations who’s only interest is the bottom line. People care about each other, companies care about themselves and getting as much of your hard earned money as possible. A crafter will appreciate your business while a corporation demands it. The choice seems pretty clear.
    35" Play Silk by TheEnchantedCupboard
  3. It’s more environmentally friendly. Handmade items are usually made from natural raw materials with much less waste and machine emissions than mass produced items. If your goal is to leave a smaller carbon footprint on the planet that you can’t go wrong with locally produced handmade items.
  4. Build a personal connection with the person making your items. Craftspeople love what they do and not only does it show in their work, but also in their attention to customer service. Have a question about how something is made or what inspired it? Ask away and the crafter will be thrilled to tell you all about it. Handmade items have a story and a history that mass produced products will never have.
    Magnetic Story Board from sosimplesosweet
  5. Avoid shopping at the mall. Holiday shopping can be pretty crazy and sometimes even dangerous as the days tick by. Why not save yourself the trouble of finding a parking space and braving the overcrowded big box stores by shopping local boutiques, craft fairs or even online handmade outlets like Etsy. Finding the perfect gift for a loved one should be fun, not frantic.
  6. Get it customized. Since the items are made by real people you can often ask for little extras like customization or even fully commissioned work to your exact specifications rather than having to settle for whatever the store has in stock.
    Wooden Yo-Yo by AmandasAngels
  7. Handmade products are made with passion. Crafters pour their time, talent and passion into everything they make. Store bought items might all be the same size and specifications, but they will never have the heart or soul that a good handmade product is made with.
  8. Quality counts. Because even the raw materials are individually selected by hand more effort is put into the quality of each individual piece. Crafters want each and every product they make to be of the very best quality as a testament to their work They don’t take mass produced shortcuts or shortchange the customer by using lower quality materials, just the best material carefully crafted into the best possible product.
    Matching Game by applenamos
  9. More unique choices. An individual making a handfull of something is able to be more adventurous than a corporation which must sell ‘x’ amount of a product to be able to turn a profit. This means that handmade products can afford to be more unique and creative than store bought products.
  10. More value for your money. Handmade items are made to last. While mass produced items must be made quickly for as little money as possible handmade products are made from only the best materials and techniques. Corporations don’t mind if their products break down over time, then you’ll just have to buy another one. A well cared for handmade product on the other hand can last generations. Perhaps that is the reason people are still crafting by hand today even with all the advancements in technology trying to render them obsolete.
Toy Lamb/Sheep by woolies

Bonus Point! Know where your gifts come from. There is something empowering about taking control and making something yourself, or at least supporting someone who does. It’s making a conscious decision to spend your money on a quality item instead of a mass produced product built by machines and underpaid workers in a distant country. Show support to your local economy and buy from artists and crafters in your area this holiday season.

Activity:: Birdseed Treats for Feathered Friends

Posted Friday, July 29, 2011

Each winter Michelle, of Hi Mamma, and her family make bird seed ornaments. They've done it for years during the kids winter break, but it really does not need to be a winter craft/project. Their craft room is the sunroom and they enjoy listening to music and watching their feathered friends have a little snack. Depending on the type of birds you have in your area, really depends upon the type of bird seed that you purchase for this project. If your children really get into watching the birds, there are lots of great kid friendly bird watching books and state specific bird field guides you can pick up at the local library, that will help you identify your backyard birds and what they enjoy eating.

Here's how you can make your own::

Ingredients and Supplies
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
3 tbsp. corn syrup (can be dark or light)
4 cups birdseed
cookie cutters (to form the shape of the bird seed holders)
waxed paper
ribbon/yarn/string

Combine the flour, water, gelatin and corn syrup in a large mixing bowl. Stir until well mixed together.

Add the bird seed and continue mixing until it is well coated. You can tell when the bird seed is coated as you cannot see the flour on the seed, and it starts to clumping.

Spoon your bird seed mixture into each mold (aka the cookie cutters), fill it half way in the mold. Use your fingers to push down on the bird seed so that is packed/dense and will stay in it shape. Then add your “hanger” at the top of the mold. We cut our desired length of yarn and folded it over to form a horseshoe…placed the ends of the string about 1 inch down from the top of the mold, so that the loop would be hung on the tree branch, and then placed more of the bird seed mixture on top of the string and the mold. Once again made sure that we packed the bird seed down tight.

Keep the birdseed mixture in the molds for roughly 2 1/2 hours. Afterwards, gently remove the ornaments from the mold pressing lightly at the edges (not the middle or it might break), and place them back on the wax paper. Allow the shapes to dry for at least 2-3 hours or even overnight before hanging.

Thanks Michelle for sharing one of your families traditions. This makes a fun activity to do with cousins or when it's too cold to play outside.

Gifting:: Etched Glass Cookie Jar

Posted Thursday, July 28, 2011

Special post from Nikki at NikkiInStitches.

You can thank me now … or later … whatever’s easiest for you.

I know … I just gave you the perfect gift for that person that you were thinking “I really should get them something, but I don’t know what…I wish I could make them something…I don’t have a lot of time, so something simple…something cute, that I know they’d like.” (I know you’ve had this conversation in your head at least once this past week!)

Enter … this cookie jar.

And it takes like 10 minutes … now you really need to thank me!

Hint … If you love the star that totally puts this little project over the edge, I would also become a subscriber. You’ll have it just in time to put on your cookie jar…and everyone will think you are the craftiest!

Materials:
  • Glass Cookie Jar (I picked mine up at my local chain craft store for just a few dollars.)
  • Stencils (I made my own…see directions below.)
  • Craft Knife
  • Cutting Mat
  • Temporary Spray Adhesive
  • Glass Etching Cream (Again, I picked up a small bottle of Armour Etch…that will be more than enough.)
  • Paint Brush
  • Cookies!!

Directions:
1. Make Stencils
If you look closely at the picture, you can see I have two stencils that I used on my jar. The first is the “M,” which I just printed out from my computer (in Brush Script font, size 350), and then carefully cut out with a craft knife on my cutting mat. The second, which is harder to see, is a snowflake. This is simply just a punch that I had in my arsenal of craft supplies.

2. Adhere Stencil and Etch
Using the temporary spray adhesive, adhere your stencils to your jar, being sure to really get them down securely so that no etching cream spreads underneath them. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the actual etching process. For me, it pretty much went: glop it on, then wait for it to dry. (The directions actually said to put on a thick coat, brushing in all directions, then allow to dry for 5 minutes.) When the etching cream was ready, I just took it over to the sink, and with water and a soft cloth, wiped off the stencils (since they are made from just printer weight paper, they almost dissolve in the water), and the dried etching cream, and project complete!
Here’s one more pic to remind you of how cute it is!
Enjoy…(and you’re welcome!),
Nikki, In Stitches
PS…What will you fill these with??
Here are two yummy suggestions:
A recipe for my great-grandmother’s butter cookies … they are the best!

Tradition:: St. Nicholas Day

Posted Tuesday, July 26, 2011

The story of Santa Claus starts with St. Nicholas, a saint who was known for anonymous gift giving to the poor and needy. Although it is mainly a European holiday, many families inside the US celebrate aspects of St. Nicholas Day on December 6th as apart of Advent or as an activity in their Christmas countdown.

The tradition is that on the eve of December 6th, children place their shoes/boots outside their doors for St. Nicholas to fill with chocolates and candies, fruit and nuts and small gifts.

Harvest Moon by Hand, has observed this tradition with her children for a couple of years years now. "It is something that they look forward to each year. It's such a simple tradition, but one that I know they'll remember when they're older." She also uses the opportunity to teach them about who St. Nicholas was - his life, how he lived it and the impact he had on the world.

If you'd like to learn more about St. Nicholas and see what parts of the tradition you might like to enjoy with your family, the St. Nicholas Center website has many resources for individuals and families, religious and non-religious.

Many EtsyKids sellers have little gifts perfect for slipping into a child's shoe to help make the morning fun and exciting. And putting in a couple for sharing with friends and siblings helps to continue the legacy of St. Nicholas and warmth of the season. Here are just a few suggestions:

Tutorial:: Beeswax Ornaments

Posted Saturday, July 23, 2011

This tutorial comes from Ann of Harvest Moon by Hand. It was one of their family advent activities. The results are beautiful and we are so pleased Ann is sharing how to make these charming ornaments.

3 Beeswax Ornaments

These beeswax ornaments are made by pouring melted beeswax into ceramic ceramic cookie molds. The mold designs lend themselves well to the ornaments, and in the window, the sunlight reveals the pattern. It takes about a pound of wax to make eight ornaments.

The first step was to melt the wax. My daughter, emptied a huge can of black beans and washed out the container. I put the wax into the can and then into a heavy pot with a few inches of water.

The next step, once the wax was melted, was to pour it into molds. Initially, we poured the wax directly onto the mold. It ended up sticking. One of the ornaments came off easily, but the rest stuck. After getting the wax off, I put some vegetable oil onto the molds. We re-melted the wax and tried again.

This time, there was too much oil and the ornaments looked greasy. Removed all the beeswax and re-melted it. Wiped off some of the oil so there was barely any there.

Third time...re-poured the wax in the molds and put little holes where the ribbon would go through.

The beeswax hardens quite quickly. For the initial ornaments, we made holes with toothpicks through the wax so a ribbon would go through them. For the last batch, I put the ribbon in the back of the hardening wax.

If we had trouble taking any of the ornaments out of the molds, we put them in the freezer for a few minutes. Then they would come out easily.

After drying them for a couple of days at room temperature, I took a paring knife and cleaned up the edges as well as put a ribbon through the holes for hanging them.

My daughter and I enjoyed making these ornaments together, and look forward to making more of them.

Walter Silva shares this memory of Christmas with the Etsykids Blog today.

It was Christmas 1972, I was 3 1/2 years old and I received a Fisher Price Pull Toy from Santa.
Wow! It was a "Snoopy" dog! Not, to be mistaken for Charles Schulz ‘s Snoopy dog from "Peanuts" or the smaller Fisher Price Snoopy dog still in production (made of plastic).
This was a bigger version, a Basset Hound made out of wood and it had a plastic red leash attached to it's neck.
I remember walking "Snoopy" back and forth for hours on our driveway and walk way too. I would take "Snoopy" with me everywhere, including visits to my Grand Parents home. Those were the good ole days...

Not sure what ever happened to my "Snoopy" but he sure made an impact on my life. Matter of Fact, the illustrations used for these wonderful toys are what inspired me to study illustration!

I have been collecting Vintage Fisher Price Pull Toys for over 2 decades. I have them displayed in my studio and they continue to inspire me.

I absolutely love creating for Children. My Niece and Nephew play an important role in helping me decide what types of animals I should create and what they want to see next. Soon, I promise... Cats, Dogs, Fish and more Owls.

Featured Shop : Scandeez

Posted Thursday, November 05, 2009

Christmas is coming and I am starting to worry about the Christmas shopping list that is bare, well, empty really. Half way through the year I did well and bought a lot for my daughter but I still have my son, and the rest of the family to buy for. Starting to panic, life is hectic without adding Christmas shopping to the mix!
So with a Christmas list in mind I set out to find a super cute Christmas item to feature today and I couldn't go past the leather infant shoes from Scandeez.

So modern and beautiful without being over the top.

Scandeez of course has other items available that are for everyday wear, but to dress baby for Santa's first visit the below outfit is perfect.

The one thing that I loved about Scandeez shop is the effort that Connie has put into her profile
After reading it you really have an insight to the person behind the store which is lovely when shopping online.
Enjoy!
