Meet Etsy Seller The Baby Handprint Company

Posted Wednesday, October 21, 2015

This week we introduce you to Etsy seller The Baby Handprint Company. The Baby Handprint Company has been creating

Kids & Baby Handprints and Footprint Ceramic Keepsakes in California since 2010.

What motivated me to start shop?

My children first and foremost. I wanted to be home with my children. I began with a home preschool and wanted to pursue my love of art and art background. I opened up my home studio and began taking appointments. I then realized I could sell online by creating a mold I came up with and began sending out to customers all over the country and world.

What is the story behind shop name?
I recently changed my shop name to be a more direct link to what my shop is about. It doesn't get more direct than The Baby Handprint Co to understand what I create.

What is your favorite item in your shop?
I have several I love. My favorite handprint and footprint pieces are the heart ornament , Snowman ornament , elephant plaque and the unique abstract heart plaque.

What is the most challenging thing about being an etsy seller?
Turning it off. I am always on and need to shut down occasionally to get my work done in studio and being with family more. Being just one person to advertise and promote, photograph work, consult with customers, time working on each ceramic piece, boxing and mailing can take much time.

What I do with time off?
I spend with my time with my husband and two girls. Whatever that may be as long as it is time with them.

What motivated you to start your shop?
I LOVE TO DRAW!! I can never remember a time in my life when I wasn't covered in pastel dust.  My career was commissioned pastel portraits. Now I am pursuing my first love; painting pictures for and about children. Also paintings that tell a story capturing a memory or wistful feeling. Etsy has been the perfect place to offer my artwork and hopefully many of them will be displayed in a child's room!
I do not think it is ever to early to introduce children to the love of art!

What is the story behind your shop name?
I am offering art for kids  and for adults to help relive wonderful childhood memories. I have some just for the adults that will hopefully give a good feeling.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
My favorites are all the artwork for children. The most popular has been ""Someday... Little Brother"" where I can add personal information about the children. I think people like that their children are in the art!
I also love the one with the little girl and the horse ""Cowgirl Whispers'"

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I didn't realize how much I would love doing this. Selling on Etsy has become a big part of my life!

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Trying to create new works as fast as I can. And...  I am always looking for new ways to show my art to more people.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I try and reproduce the artwork on the best materials I can. I want them to look as close to the originals as possible. I will work with my buyers and try to answer their questions. I make sure both the originals and prints are sent out quickly and safely!
With my cards and invitations, I always connect with the buyer to make sure they are completely satisfied, usually send them a proof,  before I send out the final.

What do you do when you aren't working?
Day to day chores. But I spend a great part of each day drawing and working on my Etsy shop.

What motivated you to start your shop?
I had just had my second daughter and was given some cute burp cloths as baby gifts. I have always been crafty so I thought I would try my hand and making my own. The first person I gave some to asked me where I had purchased them. I was so flattered! So I decided to start making them and try to sell them on Etsy!

What is the story behind your shop name?
My first daughter is named Clare and loved the alliteration with "clothesline". I can always picture my items being dried on one. :)

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
My favorite item to make are personalized blocks. I love working with customers to create the perfect gift - I've made everything from Boston College themed blocks to princesses to turtles!

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
The most challenging thing for me is finding enough time to really work on making my products and promoting them.

When I am not working on my shop, I am taking care of my two girls (ages 7 and 4). I am also president of the Hingham Mothers' Club - a philanthropic women's organization in my town. I also love cooking, reading, going to Pure Barre classes, and going to the beach.

Meet Etsy Seller Xanderdoo Stitches

Posted Wednesday, September 30, 2015

This week we meet Etsy seller Xanderdoostitches. Xanderdoo Stitches has been selling on Etsy since 2014 and the store carries fun embroidered bibs, bonnets, burp cloths, and many more baby and household items.

Monogrammed Onesie, Ruffled Onesie, Skirted Onesie, Peplum, Baby Outfit, Custom Baby Bodysuit, Layette, personalized baby, baby shower gift   Childs Christmas Apron, Personalized Christmas Apron, Monogrammed Apron, Monogrammed Smock, Girls Apron, Custom Childs Apron

What motivated you to start your shop?
I love to craft and it gives me great joy when others enjoy receiving something I’ve made. I work full time at a law office as an appellate assistant and crafting is a great way for me to unwind and do something I really enjoy and feel fulfilled doing. For many years I participated in the craft show circuit. And, while I loved speaking with customers and being with other crafters, I felt I just couldn’t reach enough of my target customer to make this type of venue worth the expenditure of the limited amount of time I had outside my full time job, family, church and other activities. Many friends and family suggested I sell on Etsy, but I was afraid of the commitment and the unknown about following such a venture. Then one day a woman in my office told me she was an Etsy seller. Aha, finally someone I can talk to about this scary thing called Etsy – someone who could answer questions! Someone who had already been through the process. After a few conversations, I decided to jump in and give it a try. So here I am, working on my second year as an Etsy seller!

What is the story behind your shop name?
Oh, I am so proud of my shop name – XANDERDOO STITCHES! I love it. It wasn’t the original name I wanted for my shop, but after searching Etsy to see if the name I wanted was available, I learned it wasn’t, and any combination of that name I could think of was taken as well. I decided it was too common, was not distinguishable and just simply would not work. So I began racking my brain and then it hit me. My youngest grandson’s name is “Xander”. Its not a common name and I thought perhaps I could work with it to come up with something unusual, catchy and memorable. It is an unusual name with a strong meaning: “Defender of the People”. While I know my shop will never defend anyone, I still hope it will live up to being strong and successful. And so was born XANDERDOO STITCHES!

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
Hmm, good question. My main selling items are embroidered baby bibs. However, I have created my own tote bag pattern which is available as a digital download in my shop as well as on Craftsy. It was also available for a limited time as a featured product at San Francisco Stitch Company with one of their applique designs.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
Definitely the amount of work that goes into having a real business of your own and convincing others that this IS a real business and not just a hobby.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
There is a lot to learn when you first start selling on Etsy. So much to read and fumble through to get on the right track. But I think overall, figuring out key words, search engines, and social media to locate and entice target customers is the most challenging for me. I think the second most challenging thing for me about being an Etsy seller is the inventory and bookkeeping aspects of owning my own business. Right behind the bookkeeping would be photography. I tell everyone I know that I am no photographer.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I have been sewing and crafting for more than 30 years and my family and friends have been the happy recipients of many of those projects. Because I value my customers, I am commitment to creating each item I sell with the same love and care I would as if those items were for my own family and friends. I use high quality blanks, fabrics and supplies to ensure a product that is beautiful and can proudly be used for many years to come.

What do you do when you aren't working?
When I’m not working at my full time law office job or in my sewing studio, I enjoy spending time with my family, attending and participating in church activities, and walks and bike rides with my husband and Lexie, my Siberian Husky, at metro parks and nature trails with a few trips to the dog park thrown in for good measure.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
Many of my projects have been shown in the galleries of a number of online embroidery shops, and a few of my projects and tips have appeared in Sew News, Designs in Machine Embroidery and Creative Machine Embroidery Magazine over the last few years. I have also written and am currently working on self-publishing my first children’s book which I hope to sell at Xanderdoo Stitches and on Amazon.com.

Meet Etsy seller The Puzzled One

Posted Wednesday, September 23, 2015

This week we meet Etsy seller The Puzzled One.  The Puzzled One makes handcrafted puzzles and toys. They have been selling on Etsy since 2009.

Rainbow Butterfly Stacking Puzzles Game Color Matching Puzzles with Fabric Tote Bag Rainbow Peacock Wooden Tray Puzzle Color Matching Game The Color Wheel Puzzle Waldorf Toy - Wooden Childrens Puzzle - Color Matching Game - Rainbow Puzzle Wheel

What motivated you to start your shop?
When I first got my scroll saw I started making simple 3 pc unfinished animal puzzles and I made a set of dinosaurs for my nieces and nephew. They had so much fun painting them I thought to myself I can sell these. So I made a whole bunch of animal puzzles and bought a whole bunch of little paint sets and headed off to the farmers market to strike it rich. I was sadly disappointed. Everyone kept saying you don't want those baby puzzles and walked on by. So I went back to the drawing board and started branching out making puzzles and toys for all ages. After opening my web site I was always looking for other ways to market my puzzles and I heard of this web site called Etsy that sold handmade goods. I said that's perfect and I signed up right away

What is the story behind your shop name?

Originally My web site was called Puzzled! and my web address was puzzled1.com well about a year after I opened Another company called Puzzled inc said that I was infringing on their trademark and that I was going to lose my web site and all the profits I'd made thus far. I freaked out for a couple of days and then it hit me all I need to do is change my name but it had to still make sense with my web address or they would still be able to claim it. So I played around with the words for a day or two and then it hit me. The Puzzled One It was perfect it was a play on words and related to my web address and yet it was just different enough that when I went back to the other company and told them that I would change my name and put a disclaimer saying that I was not puzzled inc and made a link to their site they were satisfied and that was the end of my troubles.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?

How quickly things can shift as far as sales go. In 2012 I introduced my wedding guest book puzzles and for the first time I was actually making money after seven hard years I was actually making a tidy profit then at the end of 2013 it stopped I didn't get a sale for four months. As the years went by things got worse and worse. I didn't turn a profit for two years then three months ago I changed the design of my tree guest book puzzles redid the pics and listings and added a new custom designed puzzle called a unity ceremony wedding puzzle and it all started back up again now between my two stores I am getting orders every other day sometimes two or three in one day. Its just amazing how quickly things can change

What is your favourite creations from your shop?

It's hard to pick I have so many favorites. Every time I make something new it becomes my new favorite. But if I had to pick just one it would have to be my stacking butterfly puzzles It's a set of six butterfly 3 piece puzzles each butterfly is colored a different color of the rainbow and is a 3 piece puzzle each butterfly has its own special shaped knob and they stack on top of each other in many different ways. So the child is learning about matching colors , matching shapes, their learning how to put puzzles together they are learning about balance and weight distribution They are also developing fine motor skills and eye hand coordination. This toy is a valuable learning tool and just so much fun too!

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?

Finding time to fit everything in. When you have a shop there are so many things you need to do besides just make puzzles and toys. There photography, and marketing, there's book keeping and product description writing and seo and checking with your competition and so many other things I have a hard time finding time to fit it all in while still making time to fill all the orders and come up with new puzzles and toys for my shop. But I've found if I do my puzzle making during the day and then painting and all the rest at night I can fit it all in.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?

I want to make learning fun! I want to create open ended toys that inspire creativity, encourage imagination, and develop the mind and body while being so much fun to play with that the child won't want to put it down. I create toys that are creatively designed, durably made and heirloom quality. Toys that will be well loved from one generation to the next. One of the great things about being a handmade toy maker is that you can create any type of puzzle or toy that you like. So I encourage custom designs. If a customer wants a different color scheme or wants their toy personalized or maybe they have an idea for a puzzle I can do that. I want them to make their puzzle or toy their own. I want them to know their puzzle or toy was specially made just for them. Some of my greatest puzzles and toys have come from custom requests It's my favorite thing about being a toy maker is creating something new or different. To see an idea come to life is an amazing thing!

What do you do when you aren't working?

When I'm not working (which is rare) I spend time with my family and friends and my adorable dog Layla. Whether it's getting my nails done with my Mom or having dinner at a friends or walking round the block with Layla I treasure each moment with the ones I love.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
What’s been one of your absolute favorite experiences, creating and selling your wooden toys and puzzles? I was commissioned to make a giant wooden mandala puzzle for a retreat center. The mandala was an olive tree set in mosaic stone like puzzle pieces It measured a whopping four feet in diameter. At first I wasn't sure how I was going to make it because it needed to be made from Poplar which only comes in widths of aprox. 12" So I spoke with my Dad and told him my dilemma and he worked with me and taught me how to laminate boards together to create one large board. Then we planed and sanded it and it looked as if it had always belonged together. Then we used a jigsaw to cut down the puzzle into bite size pieces small enough to use on my saw. Then I cut the rest of my puzzle and sanded over the edges and stained and sealed the puzzle It looked gorgeous but the best part was working with my Dad. I learned a valuable technique and spent quality time with him doing the thing that I love best.

What motivated you to start your shop?
I am motivated by the inner beauty of my daughters ages 9 and 10. They are just the most fantastic pair of girls a mom could ask for! Everything I create is liked by them, worn by them, and approved by them. I also use my girls in my product photos. It's a family affair.

What is the story behind your shop name?True Story...I woke up one morning and said, "I'm going to start a new creative business. It's going to be called fiber&twig." That's it.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
Well, my girls like the Narwhals. The Narwhals are their favorite. Every time I receive new felt for "Narwhal Making" I have to search for the material in one of my girls' rooms. Someone escapes with it when I'm not looking. I enjoy all the awesome fabrics available for creating my unique items. I use a variety of my own hand dyed fabrics mixed with commercial textiles. My favorite textile designer is Lizzie House...especially her Catnap series. L.O.V.E.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Tho most challenging aspect of being an Etsy seller is getting traffic to my site. I use all the usual social media avenues. Growing a business takes time and I have the patience.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I create my products using my own patterns and designs. It's very important to me and gives my shop its uniqueness and integrity.

Meet Etsy seller Sadie Bloom Designs

Posted Wednesday, June 03, 2015

This week we meet Etsy seller Sadie Bloom Designs. Sadie Bloom Designs has been selling on Etsy since June 2011 and creates fabric flower accessories.

Flower girl headband Ivory headband White flower headband Christening headband Ivory flower girl headband Flower crown Bridal headband  Peacock sash Bridal sash Wedding sash Bridal belt Wedding belt Wedding dress sash Wedding gown sash Purple sash Flower Sash Peacock wedding  Red hair flower Wedding hair flower Hair accessories Hair flower Bridal flower Bridal head piece Red flower clip Retro Bridal accessories  Flower girl headband Flower headband Baby headband Wedding headband Girls headband Bridal headband White flower headband Baptism headband

What motivated you to start your shop?
Sadie Bloom Designs started on a whim. I had recently left a career as a Paralegal, and had some time to spare. While on a very rainy visit at my parents' in the Seattle-area, I started playing around with making fabric yoyo's and "burning" fabric flowers. It was really fun, and thought it would be incredible to actually sell them! That planted the seed for Sadie Bloom Designs.

What is the story behind your shop name?
I wish I had some cute story about the creation of my shop name, but it's actually pretty simple. I like the name "Sadie" (my cat's name), and I make Blooms!

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I was surprised by how time-consuming having an Etsy shop can be. It's so much more than just making your wares. It's also about managing your shop (optimizing listings with SEO, keeping up with Etsy's changes, adding new pieces, responding to potential customers' requests, etc.), as well as staying on top of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blogging, and researching ways to get ahead). The business aspect is so important!

What is your favourite creations from your shop?

I love making the "Audrey" bridal sash. It's so large, and lovely! The beautiful rhinestone embellishment, shiny organza flower and flowy ostrich feathers... I wish I could wear one myself (grocery shopping?).
I also really enjoy making the flower girl headbands. They're all pretty unique. One of them is modeled after tulle elements off my own wedding gown, so that one's close to my heart. (Sophia:

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
There just doesn't seem to be enough time for everything! I'd love to be able to consistently stock my shop full of new pieces (I have new fabric sitting on my table that's been patiently waiting for months!) and keep up with orders and social media, but it just doesn't happen.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Do unto others! I make my pieces and treat my customers as I would like. I'm a perfectionist, so nothing ships out until every detail passes inspection. Quality is a priority, at every price-point in my shop. It's something that my customers appreciate... it's all about making customers happy!
I also like to incorporate family influences into my pieces. The shears I use belonged to my husband's great-grandmother, and are rumored to be 85 years old; my yard stick is over 60 years old, from his grandmother. I think it's neat to include these elements - they infuse my products with even more love.

What do you do when you aren't working?
When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with the hubby and friends, reading, grabbing coffee at my favorite spots, and taking quick breaks at the beach.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
Thank you so much for this opportunity! I've been a part of the Etsykids Team since July 2011, and have really enjoyed the camaraderie and support from fellow Etsy sellers. It's been an invaluable tool, and has allowed me to make great contacts, whom I still work with today!

Meet Etsy seller DollQuiltShop

Posted Wednesday, May 27, 2015

This week we meet Etsy sell DollQuiltShop. DollQuiltShop has been selling on Etsy since March 2014. DollQuiltShop carries quilts for all doll sizes. Today they are going to give us a little peak behind the scenes of their Etsy shop.

Riley Blake Small Doll Quilt  Red Wine and Olive Colonial Patchwork Doll Quilt  Pink Doll Quilt for American Girl Dolls

What motivated you to start your shop?
My father paid for me to have private sewing lessons the summer I was 12 years old. My teacher came once a week and at the end of the summer I was making easy dresses and skirts. My Mom had taught me to knit when I was 8. So you can see that both my parents valued handcrafts and I grew up getting lots of encouragement and appreciation for whatever I made. Recently I bought a brand new sew sewing machine got excited about quilting again. I discovered that making small doll sized quilts was extra fun because I got to buy lots of of different fabrics and I could finish one in 2 days. I taught myself to free-hand machine quilt and stipple and my little quilts are perfect for that. I have a blast making these doll quilts and the entire time I am working on one I imagine a child somewhere playing with it. My mother made all my doll clothes and still, to this day, I don't know how she sewed all those tiny seams on her sewing machine. They were Barbie doll clothes, so they were really small.

What is the story behind your shop name?
I chose a shop name that I thought would best explain what my shop is all about. I realize it is not very creative or cute, but I wanted it to be informative and I was a little afraid to go with something less descriptive. I have another shop I named “vermontsnuggery”, which is a nicer sounding name, but for this one I wanted it to be plain, easy to remember and all about the product. It sort of limits what I can put in the shop, but I have other places where I sell other kinds of things.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
The most surprising I have found about my on-line shop is, and I don't really want to sound negative here, but it takes a tremendous amount of work to generate sales. If you look at my shop sales number is low. I think that is partly because doll quilts are not something people are routinely searching for. Unlike pot holders or diaper pants, "doll quilts" ranks very low in google search words. I utilize all 13 of my search words with all kinds of other words, like "table runners or toppers, changing pads, wall decor, etc.", and even though there is relatively low competition on Etsy in what I make, it is still hard going. I thought I had found a niche, like you are supposed to do, but still it is hard going to get a sale. I enjoy it so much, though, that I just keep going.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I really like my Civil War and Colonial Era quilts. I love anything really old, so that is my favorite kind of quilt to make. Even though I always think no one is going to like those quilts I am surprised when I realize that they have been one of my best selling categories. In my shop I don't try to compete with the modern, clean, spare sensibility that Etsy seems to like to promote. I can only do what comes from within, and that is more sort of cluttered and fussy. I try to keep it about the product, though, and not about me. I don't really think people are very interested in me as a person, although maybe they are.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?

The most challenging thing for me is the social marketing. Keeping up with facebook, pinterest, twitter, my blog and learning more about other venues. I have to fit these tasks into my schedule whenever I have a few minutes, and since I really enjoy doing them, I do find the time to work on them. I also have found photography to be really difficult. I bought an expensive camera just for the purpose of photographing etsy items, learned to use complicated photo editing software, but still am not satisfied with the results. I have come to realize that a cell phone camera might take better pictures and be so much easier to use. I don't have a smart phone yet. so that is something for the future. (We have very spotty cell phone coverage here in the wilds of Vermont. Unbelievable, but true.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
My personal motto is, “play every day.” This is the message I want to bring to the world. Adults forget to play. Play is good. Let yourself go. Play! My mission in life is to bring fun into the world, every day for everyone. I still love to do what I did in the first grade--color, cut and paste. I love paper dolls, doll furniture and doll clothes. It's not so much about the dolls, but about all the doll "stuff".

What do you do when you aren't working?
I am a RN and work part time in long term care and I really like my job. I was born with an undeniable, overwhelming drive to be creative and I get depressed if I can't do something creative every day. Ours is a multi-generational home and I love having my children and grandchildren around. We have worked out our “spaces” and times to be together and to not be together. I sing in a church choir, take piano lessons and read voraciously. My idea of cleaning my house is to rearrange everything and put out seasonal decorations. I am a native Vermonter and love all the seasons, including winter and mud-season. My husband and I take care of our 18 month old grandson 4 days a week, 12 hours a day. Our schedule works around his Mom's schedule and so he is always with one of us. It's a very busy life.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I have a blog called “Living and Knitting in Vermont”. You can find it at http://vermontknitting.blogspot.com/
I post treasuries and tiny articles about all sorts of things. I would love some new followers. I am on Ravely as wisewoman and would love more friends.
