What motivated you to start your shop?
I have always loved to Sew and crochet. when we retired I needed something to do and also needed to supplement our retirement income a little so I decided to do what I liked to do and also make some money while doing it.

What is the story behind your shop name?
When I first started I was trying to think of a name for my shop and I was then only making the girls clothing so my husband came up with the togs4tots idea. Togs for children and wanted to make it different so decided to use a 4 instead of the word for so togs4tots was born.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
How nice it is to meet all the different folks that I come in contact with while making and selling my items.
Also something that really surprises me is the ideas people come to me with for custom orders, it is always fun creating these.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
Baby cowboy boots and hats and also the baby onsie dresses.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Trying to keep up with the fashions. And keeping up with the different styles and colors that are popular. One month you might sell quite a few of one style and the next month it may be something completely different that folks want.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
To present to my customers with an item which is well made. Also keep my items as economically priced as possible and I like to make useful items.

What do you do when you aren't working?
Cooking, baking cookies, keeping house.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
When one of my nephews saw my children's clothing on Facebook he wrote and told me. You are your Mother's daughter. I owe everything I know about sewing and crocheting to my mother. she was a GREAT seamstress and I do not hold a candle to her

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop AveryLane

AveryLane has been selling on Etsy since May 2008, they sell sewing patterns for dolls clothing and accessories, specifically designed for American Girl Dolls, Bitty Baby, and Bitty Twin Dolls. Today they are going to give us a little peak behind the scenes of their Etsy shop.

What motivated you to start your shop?
I've been sewing since I was a young child and sewing has always been a big part of my life. I thought it would be fun to try to earn a little money doing something that I love and it would allow me to continue to stay home with my kids. I think this is similar to many Etsy shop owners, which may be why it felt like a good fit from the start.
I first joined Etsy to buy fabric. It was over a year later that I opened my shop. I started selling children's clothes, because it looked fun. The Etsy community felt  supportive and encouraging, so I took a chance. My shop and business has evolved from that feeling and my passion for sewing.

What is the story behind your shop name?
As a teen and young adult I made lots of clothes for myself. When I started having kids, naturally I  sewed for them. Having 4 children within 6 years meant I didn't have as much time for sewing as I would have liked.  It wasn't until my 4th child was born that I began sewing clothes as a necessity.
My youngest daughter was extremely particular about what she would wear. She had some tactile sensory sensitivity, and at one point, she refused to wear most store-bought clothes. She preferred to wear her mom-made skirts and dresses, so I complied and sewed.
Several of the moms at her preschool asked if they could buy my handmade skirts--their girls wanted to wear those ultimate twirl skirts. As I began selling more and more skirts, I decided to open an Etsy shop. Since it had been my daughter, Avery, who prompted me to sew this style and it was her school mates who started me on this path, I decided to call my business "Avery Lane".

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
The Sabrina Dress pattern is my favorite dress design. The Sabrina dress was in my head for a long time, a classic, elegant style with a bateau neckline or boat neck (sometimes called a "Sabrina" neckline). I admire Audrey Hepburn for her many qualities: kindness,  philanthropy, class, and of course, her timeless style. The dress was designed with her in mind, specifically a dress she wore in the movie, Sabrina.

My new book, Sew in Style-Make Your Own Doll Clothes, is also a favorite project, but it's a collection of 22 patterns-not just 1 design. It brings back many childhood memories for me, memories of sewing as a young girl for my dolls and stuffed animals.  It's different than anything else in my shop. Not only is it a published book, but it's the first time I designed patterns for children to sew, instead of adults.
I worked for over a year and a half on my book. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I teach children to sew and how that differs from teaching adults. I wanted my book to be written in a kid-friendly language, and I wanted the patterns to be simple enough for children to sew by themselves, like I did as a young girl. This was the biggest challenge, to create trendy and stylish designs that were simple in construction.
It was a great experience, and I love my book. It's an awesome feeling to think that my book may help young people catch the sewing bug :) and feel the joy of creating something with their hands.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Any handcraft or art is very personal for the artist. When a person makes something with her hands, part of herself goes into her finished product. In this way, the artist is sharing a part of herself with others. If she is creating for a specific person, her feelings for that person also goes into the finished piece. It creates a connection.
When I sold children's clothing, it was so rewarding to hear how my dresses and skirts became favorites of the children who wore them. Now that I sell sewing patterns, I love when people contact me to let me know how they've enjoyed creating with my patterns, or even when they contact me for help. I could talk about sewing and fabric for hours. These conversations make the connections even stronger.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I mostly do the mom thing. Our home is very busy and often really noisy. We spend a lot of time at the soccer fields and at music concerts, doing crafts, and baking. We love watching documentaries and movies together. My husband and I like to take walks after dinner, and we all love going to the beach.
When not doing family stuff or Avery Lane sewing and blogging stuff, I teach sewing through the parks and rec and volunteer as a 4-H sewing leader. Believe it or not:  I also still sew for fun, when I have time. I love sewing clothes for my daughters and myself. My youngest still insists on mom-made clothes. She hasn't worn a store bought swimsuit in years.

Meet Etsy Seller FeltLikeSweets

Posted Wednesday, May 28, 2014

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop FeltLikeSweets

FeltLikeSweets has been selling on Etsy since start of 2014, they felt cupcakes and sweet treats for pretend play. Today they are going to give us a little peak behind the scenes of their Etsy shop.

Felt Food: Tea Set -- Felt Blueberry Vanilla Cupcake, Blue Tea Bag, Lemon and Strawberry, children's pretend play, tea set, or giftFelt tea bags -- 5 handmade felt tea bags with beads for children's pretend play, tea set, tea party, tea bags, giftFelt Food: 2 Felt Cookies Hand Stitched Heart Cut Raspberry Linzer -- children's pretend play, tea set, tea party, felt cookies or giftFelt Food: 4 SCENTED Felt Cupcakes -- 4 handmade hand stitched scented felt cupcakes with beads for pretend play, tea set, tea party, gift

What motivated you to start your shop?
I'm C.M. Cameron, father of two little girls, and am inspired by the way my girls learn and play. Chemical Engineer by day, I channel my creative energy into making felt cookies, cupcakes, and tea sets to wind down at night, after the girls are asleep.
It all started a year ago when we bought my older daughter, Charlotte, a children's tea set for Christmas (you know... the cups and plates and spoons). To go along with it, I made her a set of felt cupcakes, cookies, tea bags and strawberries. She LOVED IT SO MUCH!! Her friends LOVED IT SO MUCH!!
So, I started making small sets for Charlotte to give to her playmates for their birthdays, and boy oh boy, did their mommies LOVE THEM SO MUCH!! So, I just kept making more and more and more... and more! And the rest is sweet, sweet history.
Kid tested and Mother (and Grandmother!!) approved, all my offerings are handmade and inspired by those that I made for my girls.

What is the story behind your shop name?
Truth be told, it took me over a month, and lots and lots of scrap paper to come up with my shop name.  I love shop names that include a play on words.  Working with felt, I HAD to use the word in my shop name.  I also played around with the word, 'sew' as a play on 'so', but everything I tried was already taken.  In the end, I stumbled upon, 'FeltLikeSweets' and it stuck.  It seems obvious, now, but took some time for me to find it.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
It's funny now, but I worked for over a year to build up some inventory before opening my shop.  I thought that as soon as I opened, people would flood to my shop and I'd sell out of everything.  lol.
I've been quite fortunate to sell several of my felt cupcake and tea sets.  I've met so many great customers, and made so many new friends in this Etsy community. (Needless to say, though, I still have a few things left to sell).

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I thoroughly enjoy every part of the creative process: walking the isles of the craft store (or surfing the supply pages of Etsy), picking out felt, beads, thread, hand stitching and stuffing, and piecing together a final creation. I take great pride in my products, and enjoy their little imperfections that make them so charming and unique.
Picking just one favorite is so hard, but if forced, I select this one:
It's a replica of the ones that I've made for my girls (yes, I made two, so there's no fighting).

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
It's very simple... Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
I'm very particular. I expect that of what I buy, and certainly of what I offer.

What do you do when you aren't working?
As I mentioned above, I'm a Chemical Engineer by day.  I work for a global pharmaceutical company supporting the production of childhood and adult vaccines.  It's a job that I thoroughly enjoy.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
My little girls, Charlotte and Alice, are my joys and inspiration.  Please stop by and see their pictures on my About page!!

Meet Etsy Seller Little Kind

Posted Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop Little Kind

Little Kind has been selling on Etsy since April 2013, they sell handmade goods for little ones. Today they are going to give us a little peak behind the scenes of their Etsy shop.

toddler floral peter pan collar top, white knit, size 12 months to 5tvegan leather zipper clutch, metal zipper, hand stamped canvas, polka dot, floral lininghandmade play teepee, canvas tentlittle heart note pillow, hand stamped, polka dot canvas, floral pocket

What motivated you to start your shop?
I started my shop after a few years of toying with the idea. I knew I wanted to do it at some point in the future, but with a newborn and one year old it felt a little overwhelming to take on anything else. I would use naptimes and time after the girls went to bed to work on things. I slowly started to make things for friends or to make gifts for baby showers and I think that gave me a little wind in my sails (plus, my girls grew up a bit and both started sleeping through the night, so that helped, too ;) I had really sweet and encouraging friends and family that made me feel brave enough when the time was right.

What is the story behind your shop name?
My mom used to call my brothers and I "little littles" when we were kids and so "little little" was the first name I set out to choose. One quick etsy search let me know that wouldn't be possible since there were already a few (who would have thought?!) I kept coming back to the phrase "for all littlekind," taken from "for all mankind" and it got shortened to littlekind from there.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I am sure this answer has been said over and over, but I really had no clue how much work it would take to really open up a shop. I think I had a general idea of the work it would take to physically make what I wanted to put in my shop. It was the amount of work that went into researching pictures, item descriptions, pricing, etc. that was new territory for me. And honestly, it was little intimidating at first, but it also surprised me how creative you can be with that side of it as well.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I have really enjoyed making the "little heart note pillows." My mom and I used to have a journal that we would leave on each other's beds at night. Most of it was me asking her what color eyeshadow I should wear or if she thought so-and-so wanted to be my friend anymore, but they are so special to me now. My girls are too young to read through a journal, but I wanted to make something that you could leave on the pillow with any little picture or note or trinket inside. It's really sweet to make them and know that someone else will be doing that for someone they love.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
It can be really challenging to find what your limits are within what you do. Do I want to allow custom orders? What's a good and fair price to charge so I am actually making a profit? Would it be wise to expand into a different type of product or do I need to narrow in on just a few things? And I'm finding that most of the time the emotional decision about what I want to do isn't always the best decision for what I should do, so learning to separate those can be challenging.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Honestly, I just want to make things that if I was in a store I would want to pick it up and look at. Beyond that I really love for things to be intentional and cared for. Whether that is the way I respond to a message, or how I honor the processing time or the way I package an item, I feel like it's all an important part of the shopper's experience.

What do you do when you aren't working?
Most of my time not working is spent with my girls and my husband, although, the little ones are usually around when I'm working too. The rest is mostly lots of coffee and some embarrassingly bad television shows.

Little Kind is offering a 15% discount in her shop (excluding teepees). To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "ETSYKIDS15" at checkout. Valid until May 31st 2014.

What motivated you to start your shop?
I have always been a creative person but when I discovered graphic design I found my true passion. I spent years learning and perfecting my own style, I made lots of personalized gifts for family and friends, the interest in my designs started to grow and in 2011 I thought it was time to open a shop and see what the world thought of my designs, it wasn't an easy start and I got discouraged a few times. My New Year resolution for 2014 was to give it a very good try, promote the shop and most of all be patient. So far it has been great!

What is the story behind your shop name?
The name! It was difficult to decide but what I most enjoy designing is personalized cartoon characters so my name and my passion got together into “Martinela Cartoons”

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
What always surprises me is to see which products become popular; they are not always the ones I thought would get most interest. When I get a notice of a new order I am always excited to see which design has been chosen.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
The Baby shower invitations and party packages with cute babies in fun costumes are always fun to create. I have lots of baby shower themes to choose from and many more in my to do list.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
As all creative people I know I love the creating process, the challenge is the work involved in listing, describing, tagging and promoting the shop.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Offering exclusive designs that I create from scratch with my own clip art, being flexible to customize them to make sure the customers are 100% happy with the final product, providing great customer care and a good shopping experience.

What do you do when you aren't working?
There isn't much time off when you are trying to start a business, designing and maintaining the shop takes most of my time, I have a goal of adding 150 new designs to the shop in the next three months. A lot of work!

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop dollylanadesigns

Dollylanadesigns has been selling on Etsy since April 2013, they sell beautiful baby booties and teething rings! Today they are going to give us a little peak behind the scenes of their Etsy shop.

Baby booties 12-18 months, baby shoes, baby shower gift, baby gift, baby gift, baby girl gift, baby girl booties, purple baby shoesBaby booties 6-12 months, baby shoes, baby boy shoes, baby slippers, baby shower gift, baby gift, spring baby shoes, baby boy bootiesBaby booties 18mos to 2T,baby shoes, baby shower gift, baby gift, unisex baby booties, baby shower gift, baby gift, chevron baby bootiesBaby booties 12 to 18 months, baby shoes, red riding hood baby shoes, baby shower gift, baby gift, summer baby shoes, fairy tale baby booties

What motivated you to start your shop?
I've always loved to craft, sew and create things so when I found Etsy, I knew that somehow I wanted to be involved.  I began by making headbands and hair clips which I could also use on my daughter.  From there, I began making bow ties and neckties for babies and toddlers.  I knew I had something special though when I made my baby booties.  They sold quickly and were so fun to make.  Over time, I've focused my shop on my baby booties.  I sometimes add in some other baby items for fun but my main love is for the baby booties.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I realized that to keep your shop relevant it takes more than just making and listing items.  You have to work at it by taking great photos, promoting your shop in social media, and being competitive with the market.  Great customer service is key also.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I love creating my baby booties!  With all of the beautiful fabrics on the market today, the inspiration never ends.  I'm always finding new ways to pair fabrics to create unique booties.  Plus, I get lots of requests for custom made pairs which sometimes leads me to start sewing them in new patterns for my shop.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
The most challenging thing about being an Etsy seller is keeping your shop original and unique.  There are so many sellers who make similar items that you have to find your own niche and stay true to your own ideas.

What do you do when you aren't working?
Besides being owner of my own Etsy shop, I'm also a part time operating room nurse and mother of two (with another baby on the way)!  I love spending time with my family and travelling.  We like to go to our local YMCA a lot and participate in their community events.
