Meet Etsy Seller Janey's Superette

Posted Wednesday, November 06, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop JaneySuperette

Janey's Superette has been selling on Etsy since November 2011, she sell fun illustrations for kids' rooms and nursery wall art. Today she is sharing a little about her shop and selling handmade items.

Girl with ice cream - Illustration print - Summertime art for girl's room or kitchen - 8"x10" - JaneySuperette Whale illustration with initial W for kids room - giclee print 8x10 - JaneySuperette Ballerina Illustration Print for Little Girl's Room - Sweet Ballerina in Pink Tutu - giclee mini-print 7"x9" - JaneySuperette Mouse Tea Party Illustration for Little Girls Room ... Limited Edition 17 x 11 Nursery Wall Art Print - JaneySuperette

What motivated you to start your shop?
I'd been working as a children's illustrator for years - books, magazines, school readers, etc. - and I thought I might find some success in selling my illustrations directly to the end user - kids and their families. I'd found the Etsy model intriguing and really loved the idea that I could have a direct hand in marketing and selling my work, rather than relying on a publisher to do that for me. I finally got serious and set up my shop with only a very few items on my birthday, almost two years ago.

What is the story behind your shop name?
When I was little, my favourite doll was called Janey, and I can't remember why but it's possible it's because my middle name is Jane. My husband calls me Janey. So I thought I'd use that as my alter-ego, and set up a little "superette" where you can buy all sorts of things you either really need, or never knew you needed until you saw it. Of course, having been super busy with everything over the last two years, I'm still only offering one thing in my shop: prints. But I do have plans to expand into other items in the near future!

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I guess like most people I'd assumed it would be easy to make LOTS of sales. I believed in what I was selling and that it'd appeal to a wide range of people, so I thought the sales would just.... happen. What I didn't count on was that there is just SO MUCH amazing stuff on Etsy, and it's so easy to see something you love, favourite it, and then move on to the next amazing thing and forget all about it. I didn't realize it would take literally hundreds of views and dozens of favourites - and be included in a whole bunch of treasuries - before making a single sale.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
At the moment, my favourite piece is my newest:

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
By far the hardest part is having the time to really make a go of it. I'm always really busy with commissioned work and, well, life. To really market my shop to the point that I'd make anything close to a living from it would take, I think, at least a regular part-time schedule (spending like half of every day). And then you have to maintain that. So my shop remains at the level where it's fun, and I make the occasional sale to supplement my income.
The BEST part of the challenge, though, is the community aspect - being part of teams like EtsyKids, where everyone's in the same boat and you have strength in numbers and great ways to cross promote. Everybody wins!

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
It's not complicated... it's just making art that makes people smile - especially the little kiddoes. Bright, happy colours and goofy looking animals, and I love throwing a retro twist in there when it makes sense - with vintage type and paper ephemera.
Another important thing is to make prints that will stand the test of time rather than contributing to a disposable culture - so I only use acid-free paper and archival-quality inks.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
Oh boy. It probably would depend on the person and the day. I think I change a lot depending on the setting. My family would say I work really hard (maybe too hard) and am super calm and dependable (at least I hope they would!) Most of my friends would say I'm a little crazy, and often obnoxious. So, it's a mix.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I spend time with my family - I have a 5-yr-old daughter, who is sweet and fun and never stops talking and loves to draw and paint. The other thing I do a lot is run; I'm currently training for this year's New York marathon. And I love to relax and eat and drink and laugh with friends, whenever I get the chance.

Fairytale illustration print - 8"x10" - Hans Christian Andersen quote with cute garden fairy - JaneySuperette Cute Parisian bunny illustration print - 8"x10" - Rabbit family nursery art - retro type says "L'amour Fou" - JaneySuperette Cute cat illustration print on hot pink - Italian cat says: Miao - Would be great in kids room. Size 1-2,5 years - ZanziBach Natural linen boys shirt, wedding shirt, Eco friendly, Boho top in beige color // size US 1-6 (EU 80-116) - ZanziBach

What motivated you to start your shop?
I have always been addicted to all things creative. For the last 15 years of my life sewing has been a true passion of mine. After having my boy I was inspired to create clothing for him using natural materials, thinking about comfort and quality. In stores I couldn't find clothing that met my requirements, so I thought there must be other moms in the world that felt the same as me, and would fall in love with the clothes I designed and made. So I opened my Etsy shop.

What is the story behind your shop name?
ZanziBach is a mysterious character, created by my father during my childhood. He created some characters by telling stories to my sister and me (also to frighten us a little bit). Zanzibaks and Parababiks are two of those characters. I chose the name ZanziBach, inspired by the character Zanzibaks combined with my name (Zanda) and surname (Bach). It is connected to my own childhood and great for the next generation of children.
ZanziBach is mysterious, playful, always in for adventures and most of all a children friend!

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I was pleasantly surprised this month when one man from USA ordered 5 pieces from my shop. It was also great to see a man buying lovely handmade clothing for his kids.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
My most favourite item is these https://www.etsy.com/listing/122519810/toddler-boys-corduroy-pants-in-brown corduroy boys pants. These were one of my first items and I love them so much. They have a great design and they are so comfy and stylish. You can also purchase them in different colour combinations! And I also love, love, love my linen haremshorts https://www.etsy.com/shop/ZanziBach?section_id=13347897

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
You must be patient waiting your first customer. You have to invest a lot of work and time to set up the shop and listings so that customers will find you.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Beautiful in their simplicity, created from natural materials and high quality. I always keep the needs of little children in mind: comfort, easy to wear and breathable materials. I really love linen fabric so many of my clothing is made from linen.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
Creative master of sewing machine and I think they evaluate quality of my work.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I spend my time with my family – my 2 years old son and husband. We love adventures. Also I can be found dancing salsa, I really love to dance, this is another love of my life.

Meet Etsy Seller CreativeCraftsByJen

Posted Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to

CreativeCraftsByJen has been selling on Etsy since August 2012, she sell hair clips, bows and accessories. Today she is sharing a little about her shop and selling handmade items.

Tropical Dolphin Stacked Boutique Bow - Summer, Ocean, Beach, Layers, Pink, Green, Chevron, Blue, Purple, Aqua, Flower, Prop, Alligator Clip - CreativeCraftsByJen US Army Stacked Boutique Bow - Camo, Military, Support the Troops, Star, Loops, Prop, Child, Baby, Acessory - CreativeCraftsByJen Bubbly Minnie Mouse Stacked Boutique Bow - Yellow, Red, Black, Disney, Cream, Heart, Glitter, Costume, Hair Accessory, Alligator Clip - CreativeCraftsByJen Bow Commander Stacked Boutique Bow - Pink, White, Chevron, Pearl, Duck, Hair Bow, Double Prong Alligator Clip, Country Girl, Photo Prop - CreativeCraftsByJen

What motivated you to start your shop?
In the summer of 2012, I married my hero (my husband is in the Army) and we moved to Florida. So far from everything I've known! I wasn't back in school yet and my husband was gone at work during the day so I wanted something to do. I have always been the creative kid growing up and that hasn't changed! So after researching Etsy and looking around on the internet, I approached my husband about trying to start my own small business. I wanted to get my creativity out, do something that I enjoyed, and earn a little money. He fully supported me, we took a few trips to the craft store, and here I am today working hard to make it a success!

What is the story behind your shop name?
Creative Crafts By Jen, for one, comes from my name Jen. The "creative crafts" part goes to when I first started and wanted to also make wreaths and home décor. While that didn't really work out and today I sell "handmade hair accessories & more", the more covers whatever my mind may dabble into.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
Once I was getting started and learning new things, a few things surprised me. One being the online community of small business owners who are willing to help one another grow just as they would want someone to do for them. Another would be boutique modeling. I always thought all these shops just got amazing photos from customers to use. I never realized you could book models through listing sites to get your items photographed for advertisement. I loved it!

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
The thing I most enjoy making is any kind of hair accessory...bows, flowers, or headbands! I love the versatility of what I can do with different supplies to create a unique item!

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
To me, the most challenging thing about being an Etsy seller is getting your products out there and portrayed in the best way possible to get the buyer to want to purchase from you over everyone else.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I offer handmade hair accessories & more. I want my customers to feel secure and satisfied in purchasing from a small business. Not only do I want to offer them quality handmade products, but I want to provide quality customer service. I want the customer to feel like they are talking to and ordering from a real person that cares about their satisfaction.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
In my husbands words...."Jen is a very caring, generous, and devoted person. When she's not crafting and spending time with her husband she devotes some of her free time to helping deliver furniture to formerly homeless veterans. I am glad to say she is my wife and is awesome."

What do you do when you aren't working?
When I am not working, I am taking care of the house, playing with our fur-baby, or relaxing with my husband. I am addicted to watching The Big Bang Theory. I like to get outside, especially since were currently stationed in Florida where its warm and sunny!

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
Mostly my items are ready to ship, but I am always open to custom orders! You can contact me and I will try and work with you to create your ideal item. If by chance it is something I cannot do, I will recommend you to someone who can!

CreativeCraftsByJen is offering a $5.00 discount on orders over $20.00. To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "INTERVIEW5" at checkout. Valid until 25th November 2013.

Meet Etsy Seller We HIVE, Personalized Gifts & Fundraising

Posted Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to

We HIVE has been selling on Etsy since January 2012, she sell personalized story books for kids. Today she is sharing a little about her shop and selling handmade items.

Personalized Ballerina Princess Book, Ballet, Dance, Learn Ballet Steps, Ballet Lessons - wehive Nursery Rhymes - Personalized Kids Decor - Mother Goose - Made to Order - wehive Santa's Story - Made to Order - Personalized Children's Keepsake Story Book - Learning Toy - wehive Kids, Baby Toddler, Personalized Baby Shower, Birth Announcement, Infant, Memory Book, Personalized, Made to order, Baby Book - wehive

What motivated you to start your shop?
Well, as many Mothers can relate I desperately wanted to be home with my family, and I understood that it would definitely be a financial sacrifice. I didn't know if it was possible but I wanted to try to make it work, so to help out financially I started We HIVE in 2007.

This is the reason I wanted to make personalized story books my business.
I have learned to love reading but it was not always that way. I struggled to learn when I was young. I didn't understand the connection between letters, sounds and words. After struggling for some time, I was given a book that someone, I can't remember who, thought would help me. (They will never understand what a gift they had given me.) The book title and story had my name in it. "Susan's Secret Garden". I will never forget it. It was explained to me that the story was about me and that it actually had my name printed in it. I was so excited. I knew what my name looked like in print and went through all the pages looking for it. The story was so much fun as I could imagine myself in the story. I had the book read to me over and over and over! Soon, I was looking through the book by myself after having heard it so often and memorizing most of it. After that I was starting to put things together myself as far as reading went. It took some time but finally I wanted to read and was excited about it rather than afraid. I am so grateful for that book. I still have it after 38 years and will treasure it forever!

I love how reading empowers children at every level.

What is the story behind your shop name?
Acronym: We HIVE = We (You and Me) Help Invest Volumes in Education

Second meaning: We HIVE = working together as a community. If we thought of the world as one home for all “HIVE” and we all worked together imagine what we could accomplish. That is the meaning behind my shop name.

I really wanted my business to be meaningful. Not just in a financial way for my own family but by helping children in as many ways as I can with literacy, financially, meaningful gifts, charities locally and abroad, schools, children’s programs and more.

When you buy a personalized story book or have a fundraising event through We HIVE you are not just giving your child a great gift or helping your own organization. I take a portion of what I earn every year and donate to a children's organization. So your purchase is helping others as well.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I love all of my products but I have to say I have really enjoyed creating my “New Personalized Companion Journals”. You can now make a personalized journal out of any of the personalized story books covers. You can buy them alone or as a companion to the story book. My journals are personalized on the first page.

Eg. The Personalized Baby Book – A heart warming record of baby's birth. This heartfelt and popular book is special for both parents and children alike and makes a great Baby shower, Baptism, Christening, Christmas or personalized baby gift for any occasion.

Use the Personalized Companion Journal as a Pregnancy Diary before baby arrives so that you and your child will cherish those memories and create conversations for a lifetime or you may want to record baby’s first year. It is totally up to you.

Eg. My Tea Party - Planning a personalized tea party for friends requires hard work and aforethought. First she must decide who to invite and what to serve, then, what type of decorations are necessary. Setting up for the party, getting properly dressed and using proper manners are valuable lessons learned here.

Use the Personalized Companion Journal as a Recipe Book to store the baking recipes you and your child make together. You have your choice of lined or blank paper.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Getting the word out! Thank you EtsyKids for this opportunity.
My facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/We-HIVE-Personalized-Gifts-Fundraising/358554087506297

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I guess what I want to do is help people in as many ways as I can so I think that trying my best to buy products from merchants that are giving back is important to me and that is what I would like to help my customers to do.
This quote comes to mind. “Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving.” -Hank Rosso

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
I would say they would describe me as passionate about my interests. I think they would also describe me as a quiet person, loyal friend and someone they can confide in and count on.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I try to enjoy nature as much as possible. Bundled up with a good book outside with some warm tea on a cool breezy day or just sitting and watching the birds and squirrels foraging for food or even watching a spider spinning its web is heaven for me. I used to sketch wildlife but I haven’t had time since we started our family. I'm hopeful that I will be able to reignite that passion in the future.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
Yes. Imagine your child growing up and reading a story about themselves to their own children. Your grandchildren! What a wonderful experience to look forward too.

I wanted to mention why personalized gifts are so important to me. It is really important for me to not contribute to the world’s waste problem through my business. Personalized gifts (from my shop or another) are a great way to help reduce that problem. I do understand that many people have meaningful items that are not personalized that they will keep and treasure. They have likely given a lot of thought to that purchase for themselves or for someone else, I have a few myself. My thought is that to often we make a quick run to the department store to make that last minute purchase because we are so busy. Meaningful items personalized or not are less likely to become part of the landfill. So I chose to make personalized items for that reason. They will use less energy throughout their lifetime and are less likely to be given away, recycled or simply thrown out and more likely to become a treasured keepsake.

Theme's include: Adventure, Baby, Birthday, Christian, Christmas, Counting and Rhyming, Sibling, Sports, and more.

We HIVE is offering a whooping 40% discount in her shop at the moment. To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "CHRISTMASNOW40" at checkout. Valid until end of October 2013.

Meet Etsy Seller eLeMeNOPkids

Posted Wednesday, October 09, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop eLeMeNOPkids

eLeMeNOPkids has been selling on Etsy since May 2012, they specialize in all things KIDS! They hand paint wall letters for your child's room, and also make various educational and fun activities geared toward keeping your little one learning, and using their IMAGINATIONS through pretend play! Today they are sharing a little about their shop and selling handmade items.

Personalized Letters from Santa - eLeMeNOPkids Wooden Rainbow Sorting Bowls-Montessori inspired - eLeMeNOPkids Hanging Wall Letters (5 letters). Handpainted and custom designed hanging wall letters for room or nursery - eLeMeNOPkids Felt Rainbow Popcorn Bag Set - eLeMeNOPkids

What motivated you to start your shop?
I was motivated to start my shop when I saw how many people loved my hand painted wall nursery letters. It expanded and grew over the past year into including more educational items for children, and I'm so grateful for the unending support I get from my customers.

What is the story behind your shop name?
Well, I was originally just painting nursery wall letters. And I knew I wanted my shop name to be something cute and "kid-y". And "LMNO-P" is kid-friendly and is all about letters, so I went with that. After a year I added the word "kids" to the end of my shop name so it could reflect what my business is all about.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
What surprises me the most is how many friends I've made online! I think I have more online friends that physical friends! I've really gotten to know a LOT of my customers, and I just can't believe the amount of support I receive--daily! It's incredible!

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
My favorite creations are my wooden toys. I am a Montessori-lover at heart and I love how my wooden toys encourage imaginative, yet educational invitations to play.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
It's hard to find time to add more products to my shop. I'm blessed to be busy, and I struggle with finding the balance between family and running the shop, but I'm very intentional of only working a certain number of hours a day. I don't want my little one to remember me just sitting behind my sewing machine or computer all the time.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I firmly believe play is the way children learn. It is fun for them and they can learn about themselves, the people around them, their environments, and build skills needed for the big world! Most of our toys are great for any child, and are even greater for those children who have autism, sensory problems, dyspraxia, and any other learning disability where they may need simple activities to keep them learning through play. I am inspired to create toys for those children who could benefit from having sensory toys that encourage open-ended play.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
I think someone would describe me as fun-loving and creative. My husband would just call me a chatter-box.

What do you do when you aren't working?
When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my family. They are the reason I have the honor to run my own business. My little one loves having me home with him, and my husband is amazing to work so hard so that I can stay home and do something I love. If I'm lucky enough to get a few minutes of "alone" time, you will find me taking a hot bath, reading a book, or laying on the floor playing with my puppies.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I just want to thank anyone for supporting me these past 2 years. I'm eternally grateful for all of the friends I've made through my business.

eLeMeNOPkids is offering 15% discount on all orders over $15. To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "ETSYKIDS" at checkout. Valid until 14th October 2013.

Meet Etsy Seller Whimsy Wendy

Posted Wednesday, October 02, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to
Etsy shop Whimsy Wendy

Whimsy Wendy has been selling on Etsy since March 2007, she sell party decor, room decor, tutus and dress up products, made to last...her quality is in her stitching. Today she is sharing a little about her shop and selling handmade items.

CHOOSE YOUR COLOR Newborn Baby Girl Tutu by Whimsy Wendy - whimsywendy Pink Ballerina Princess Party Pack of 16 Wee Whimsy Wishing Wands, - whimsywendy Pink Pretty As A Princess Costume Tutu Set with Hat and Wand - whimsywendy Fuschia Pink and Light Pink Whimsy Wishing Wand - whimsywendy

What motivated you to start your shop?
After having children, I had this incredible creative itch I just couldn't scratch. I waiting until both my girls headed off to all-day school, then began fooling around on the sewing machine. A good friend had read an article about Etsy and urged me to start up a shop. That was 2007.

What is the story behind your shop name?
My husband and I were trying to come up with a 'sticky' name and I kept putting "Wendy" first. He suggested turning it around. It's a tongue twister but its stuck.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
When I first got started I think I was so surprised that people from around the country and the world wanted to buy things that I made with my hands. It's humbling and gratifying at the same time.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I think my most favorite creations I make are my tulle puffs. They're perfect for parties or room decor. They are an easy 'pop' of color and can be made in any color combination you can think of. They were originally created out of my leftover tutu yardage and have been hugely popular. They were even highlighted in Brides Magazine last Spring.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
The most challenging thing about being a Etsy seller has ben that for the rare occasion I have had to shut down my shop, it's taken a lot longer to get my 'mo jo' going again. There is something of a rhythm or pattern to listing and sales and when you shut down your store for a period of time, it takes a lot more effort to start the wheel turning again.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
I think most of my friends and family would describe me as positive, fun, creative and energetic. I love good energy and always try to surround myself with good people, beautiful colors and pretty things. It really helps to feed my soul.

What do you do when you aren't working?
When I'm not working, I'm 'parenting' my two teenaged girls. They are great kids and have probably taught me more about myself than I've taught them. My husband and I also love to travel. We're saving up for our next (cross your fingers) trip to Italy.
