What motivated you to start your shop?
I've always had a great passion for sewing. My aunt started teaching me on her industrial machines fairly young at about 13 years old. Even though I diverted and join the military (US Navy) as a hospital corpsman I never gave up on the love of sewing. It wasn't until I had my fourth child that I decided that I would need to be a full time mom and still be able to support them financially. Therefore, I put the joy of sewing which started off as a hobby to benefit others as well as my little ones. So my children were the greatest motivating key aspect for me in starting up my Etsy shop.

What is the story behind your shop name?
In coming up with my shop name, there were many criteria to choose from. First of all I wanted something that would explain what I do, without me having to. It had to be easy to pronounce and easy to remember. After brainstorming so many different combinations of phrases and words, finally something caught my attention. So with that in mind the name Sew Little Ones took shape, form and flight.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
What surprised me the most was how easy it was to set up my Etsy shop and how customers engage and interact with such love and passion for my handmade products.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I think my favorite creation from my shop would be my Baby Bottle Holder Ball. You could only imagine starting off with 36 individual pieces of fabric and ending up with such a beautiful work of art. It brings such pleasure and always amazes me every time.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
The most challenging find about Etsy would be trying to keep my goal to ensure that my Etsy shop stands out from the crowd while endlessly trying to promote my brand.

Sew Little Ones is offering 15% OFF CHRISTMAS IN JULY SALE!  To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "XMASJULY15" at checkout. Valid on orders over $30, expires 31st July 2013.

Meet Etsy Seller Reetmomma

Posted Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to

Reetmomma's Oodles 'n Doodles has been selling on Etsy since November 2009, they offers offers quality handsmocked treasures and custom OOAK items for the 'doodlebugs' in your life. Today they are sharing a little about their shop and selling handmade items.

What motivated you to start your shop?
Sewing doesn't appear to be taught in schools any more and it saddens me to think the art will be lost.   I LOVE to sew, all kinds of sewing, smocking, upholstery and quilting, but my children and grandchildren have outgrown grandma's heirlooms!  I re-directed my focus to sewing for others as gifts and then discovered Etsy!  I thought I would give Etsy a try as a hobby since I was employed as a full time software engineer for a company that was experiencing 'growing pains' and difficulties with turning out quality products.  I was also bothered by the abundance of low quality 'stuff' we import--especially kids clothing -- and stock our shelves with!  I was also disturbed by seeing babies and little girls dressed like teens and punk-rockers in their most innocent stage of existence.

Off I went, embarking on a journey to prove that QUALITY and CUSTOMER SERVICE are not obsolete in the great USA!   It was slow at first, and I probably earn something less than minimum wage, but smocking and creating children's heirlooms is truly a labor of love and much more rewarding than writing computer software.  I recently retired from my day job and am now focusing on Reetmomma's Oodles 'n Doodles, hoping to eventually design my own styles, patterns and create my own 'line' one day to offer to those who sew and smock and keep the art of sewing alive and well.

What is the story behind your shop name?
My name is Rita, but my dear husband donned me "Reetmomma" through the years of being mom and grandmother.  My daughter Anne and I said we would love each other  "oodles and oodles until forever and back."  Anne's baby boy, Jack, became my little "doodle bug pookie pie" and the shop REETMOMMA'S OODLES 'n DOODLES was born.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
What surprises me most is the amount of government regulations one has to navigate through to get a child's item to the market.  I find it astonishing that the US has laws to protect children from lead, small parts, etc, yet stores' shelves are filled with children's items loaded with beads, sequins, small parts that are not securely fastened and questionable pieces and designs.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I have two favorites which are seasonal.  For Easter (or any occasion to celebrate) I offer a Beatrix Potter style bunny dress which is smocked with Peter Rabbit in his blue waistcoat caught red-handed with the carrots from Mr. Mac Gregor's garden!  For Christmas, my favorite piece to create is a large wool Christmas stocking which is personalized and tailored to a person's interests (golf, fishing, dolls, etc).  I recently sold a Christmas tree skirt with a North Pole theme which matched a family's stockings.  The buildings at the N Pole were also personalized for the family members-- including a mailbox with all the grandparents' names!  What a wonderful heirloom to pass on through the generations and add to over the years.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
I have SO MANY ideas that pop into my mind and things I would like to create and offer to the market,  but just cannot get to all of them to fruition.  One step at a time...I'll get there!

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Quality and customer service speak for themselves.  I strive to perfect everything that is created in my shop and am willing to offer money-back guarantees to stand behind my work.  I also believe that there is simply no substitute for outstanding customer service in the way of constant communication with customers, offering them choices of colors, sizes and variations.

How would someone (other then you) describe you?
Extremely creative!  But then, I do come from a family of artisans so it's in the blood and gene pool.  Someone in my family can be found to make just about anything and everything from restoring antique toy trains to creations from the kitchen!

What do you do when you aren't working?
Sleeping, or playing with my grandson who is very creative.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I hope consumers realize that handmade items from artisans are truly works of art and cannot be found on the shelves at the commercial stores.  A true artisan puts many hours of love into their creations.  Let's all do our part to help promote handmade over mass-made...

Reetmomma's Oodles 'n Doodles is offering FREE SHIPPING (CONUS) during the month of July, for all CHRISTMAS IN JULY ORDERS place during this month. To use the coupon visit her etsy store and enter code "XMASINJULY" at checkout.

Today we would like to introduce you to Mel
and her Etsy shop Mels Creative Wishes

play food, felt crowns, birthday hats & cloth books. Today she is sharing a little about her shop and selling handmade items.

What motivated you to start your shop?
Sewing and making toys is my passion.  I wanted to do something that would make me happy every single day. My youngest son had just started full time school and I really didn't want to work for someone else. So I began Creative Wishes.

What is the story behind your shop name?
The creative part of Creative Wishes comes from my love of sewing and being crafty. The wishes part came about because when my kids were younger they couldn't walk past a dandelion in seed without picking it, blowing it and making a wish. Their little faces would light up as if they had come across a pot of gold and they would proudly present it to me as if they were giving me a valuable treasure. The dandelion represents a kid taking something and using their imagination to make it what they want it to be. So that humble weed, the dandelion is the inspiration behind the Wishes part of my name.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
Initially that other loved my handmade toys and games just as much as I did.  I also wasn't prepared for the amount of time it takes to promote, improve and maintain my shop.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
Princess crowns are my favourite to make.  I love combining different felts and adding lovely embellishments to make each one unique and special.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
I thought in the beginning it was just a matter of making my toys and listing them and then waiting for the sales to come in.  Of course it isn't that easy.  Since then I have spent hours reading about SEO, branding, marketing and as much small business information as I can get my hands onto.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
Products: Handmade toys made for everyday creative play, made with durability and safety a top priority.
Shop: Never stop evolving my shop and small business.

What do you do when you aren't working?
Gardening, reading, enjoying time with my family.

Please tell us a little about the children's items market / handmade movement in your Country?
Handmade in Australia is booming at the moment.  There are a good amount of handmade markets on weekends.  There are also some fantastic and unique shops selling handmade.
I just spent the weekend at a huge craft and quilt fair and there is another local one in August.

What motivated you to start your shop?
Like a lot of people I started making things for my little ones and people said I should sell them. So I opened up shop and it was a hit pretty much from the get go!

What is the story behind your shop name?
In the beginning everything in my shop was made with felt so I wanted to incorporate the word 'felt' somewhere in the title. And because my items could be used for parties I decided to add the 'celebrating' part on. I think it's a great fit for your shop.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
Between all the websites I sell on I've posted around 700 packages over the past 2.5 years. Even after all that time I still get a thrill when someone orders from me!  I can only imagine just how busy I could be if lived in the United States.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
I love Love love making my personalized name crowns. I take pride in the fact that each one is one of a kind!

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Keeping up with all the convo's. And I do have to admit some days are a little tough to find the motivation to start sewing. For example being up all the night before with a sick baby. But it all has to get done and 95% of the time I love doing it.

Please tell us a little about the children's items market / handmade movement in your Country?
It's going quite well. I live in New Zealand and we have an etsy equivalent website that I successfully sell my items on. My city also has some well established craft markets that are popular venues for selling children's items.

What motivated you to start your shop?
I was pregnant with my daughter in 2008 and I started to hand sew decorations for her nursery.
Then after years of dreaming of starting a business I started Brooklyn Owl in 2010 inspired by my 2 year old.

What is the story behind your shop name?
I have lived in Brooklyn since 2007 and I feel so inspired living
here. I love it so much and I knew I wanted it to be a part of my business name.  My daughter's favorite animal and one of her first words was "owl" thanks to the owls at the Prospect Park Zoo and so Brooklyn Owl just felt right.

What is your favourite creations from your shop?
My current favorite items that I really enjoy making are my unicorn horns.  They were my daughter's idea and they bring me such joy seeing her wear them and getting to send them around the world for others to enjoy as well.

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Etsy is open 24 hours a day so it is hard for me to step away from my
shop!  I care about my customers and I want them to have a pleasant
shopping experience and that often causes me to respond to customers and package orders hours after I am supposed to be in bed!

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I strive to create products that are both fun and functional that make people's lives a little brighter and the world a little cuter.

What do you do when you aren't working?
It can be really hard for me to put down my sewing needles but some
of my favorite moments away from work are relaxing with my husband and daughter.  I hope to spend a lot of time at Coney Island this summer!

Meet Etsy Seller Grizzly Bear Greetings

Posted Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Today we would like to introduce you to Abi
and their Etsy shop Grizzly Bear Greetings

Grizzly Bear Greetings has been selling on Etsy since August 2011, they offers a variety of cute animal greeting cards and nursery art. And can customize or personalize any of their products to suit your occasion. Today they are sharing a little about their shop and selling handmade items.

Bunny Rabbit Card - Tennis Cards - Blank Notecard Set (Set of 6) - GrizzlyBearGreetings Baby Nursery Art - Bears at the Carnival Children's Bedroom Art (8x10 Print) - GrizzlyBearGreetings 1st Birthday Card - Kids First Birthday Greeting Cards - Hippo - GrizzlyBearGreetings Hippo Cards - Pole Vault Blank Card (Set of 6) - GrizzlyBearGreetings

What motivated you to start your shop?
After a few years of creating kids' birthday cards and baby shower invitations for friends and family, I finally decided to take the plunge and open an Etsy shop.

What is the story behind your shop name?
When I'm not working on my Etsy shop, I run a web/graphic design firm named Brown Bear Creative. So when I started my shop in 2011, I wanted to keep a similar theme. I think bears make a great aesthetic. There's something about them that draws people in. But I also feature a lot of other animals in my artwork, such as rabbits, hippos, turtles, and dogs.

What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I've been surprised about which designs have become my bestsellers. Since I'm not always able to guess what will be a hit, I just try to draw things I'm interested in at that moment.  I put everything out there and see what sticks!

What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Learning all about shipping has always been a challenge for me. Getting the packing materials just right, keeping up with the latest postal charges, and streamlining the packing process is something I'm always working on.

What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
My goal is to create fun, unique illustrations that make people smile. I gravitate towards scenes that connote a carefree childhood -- simple joys like laughing, playing, and exploring.

What do you do when you aren't working?
Since working usually involves sitting in front of a computer, when I'm not at work, I like to be outside. I enjoy gardening, running, and playing tennis.

Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?

My two house rabbits are the inspiration behind my Little Bunnies series (cute brown rabbits who go biking, rowing, sledding, etc. together). While my pet rabbits don't engage in people sports, they are still very playful and mischievous, and they enjoy each other's company. I think those qualities come through in the illustrations.
