Introducing Melon Dot

Posted Thursday, January 26, 2012

Today we introduce you to Sarah from Melon Dot!

Q: What motivated you to start your shop?
I started my shop after inheriting my gramma's sewing machine. She was a master crafter of all kinds. I wish I would have learned my from her.

Q:  What is the story behind your shop name?
My shop name came from brainstorming. I listed lots of different things/words that I like and tested out combos. Melon also represents some of my favorite colors: pink and green.

Q:  Do you have a favorite Etsy Shop (non-child related)?
I do not have one particular etsy shop that I am a fan of. I have been doing a lot of looking in shops that feature wall art recently looking for items to add to the walls in our new home! A shop called rookies also has some seriously scrumptious looking desserts.

Q:  What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
I really enjoy having an etsy shop. My favorite thing about running my etsy shop is meeting so many people and crafting something unique just for them or the little one in their life.

Q:  What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
The most challenging obstacle in being an etsy seller is staying on top of everything. I create extra work for myself when I am not organized because I double and triple check myself. Now that I have my own workspace and am not constantly clearing projects from a family space it is much easier.

Q:  What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
My personal philosophy behind my shop and products is to be open and honest. I love providing options and being confronted with new ideas from buyers.

Q:  How would someone (other then you) describe you?
Someone else would describe me as caring, positive, and strong.

Q:  What music do you have on while you are creating?
My kids provide all the music in our house! Usually my sewing time is calm time.

Q:  What do you do when you aren't working?
When I am not working, I am with my kids helping them create. They have projects galore to do! They go through a lot of glue and felt and string.

Q:  Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I am in awe of all things etsy.

Introducing Booger & Tash!

Posted Thursday, January 19, 2012

Today we introduce you to Vickie from Booger & Tash!

Q: What motivated you to start your shop?
I first started my shop when my youngest daughter (my middle child) was 2 1/2, I was looking for children & baby items that were cute, but also trendy & unique, and I just wasn't able to find that in the stores/ malls. I knew that I could make the things that I wanted & I figured that others were probably looking for the same things too, so I opened my shop.

Q: What is the story behind your shop name?
My shop - Booger & Tash is named after the nicknames that I call my daughters (Brianna - Booger, & Natasha - Tash)

Q: Do you have a favorite Etsy Shop (non-child related)?
Oooh, there are so many great shops on etsy! A few of my (non-child related) favorites are http://www.etsy.com/shop/JennifersJewels where I get my labels, http://www.etsy.com/shop/goosegrease so cute!, http://www.etsy.com/shop/sunshineceramics made the most beautiful christmas ornaments for me a couple of years ago, http://www.etsy.com/shop/PolishedProductions?ref=ss_profile makes lovely frames, http://www.etsy.com/shop/shopsaplingpress her stuff just makes me laugh!, http://www.etsy.com/shop/scratchandsniff?ref=ss_profile Lou made me a very cherished silhoutte of our late dog & of course, my sister's new shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/MissVeraVintage?ref=ss_profile for vintage barbies

Q: What surprised you most about having your own craft / online shop?
Custom requests! I always find it surprising when someone requests something that doesn't really fall into a catagory of my shop, I recently made a couple of pairs of suspenders for a bride's fiance for their wedding, & a minky pillowcase/ sleepingbag for a puppy to sleep in!

Q: What do you find most challenging about being an Etsy seller?
Shipping costs & delivery times. I live in Canada, shipping from here is very expensive & often takes 2 - 3 weeks, especially if the order has to cross the border.

Q: What's your personal philosophy behind your shop / products?
I want to make items that are modern & hip, but also will stand the test of time. I want the customer to know that I take pride in every item I make & choose the best supplies, from the fabrics to packaging.

Q: How would someone (other then you) describe you?
People I know, would describe me as calm, patient, even tempered & kind.

Q: What music do you have on while you are creating?
I don't, usually just the hum of the sewing machine & the sound of my son snoring in his highchair beside me :)

Q: What do you do when you aren't working?
Well, I have 3 young children (2 girls & a boy) so, when I'm not working, I'm usually driving them to school, library storytime, gymboree or playing with & taking care of them.

Q: Anything else you'd like to tell us or share?
I love that I have found Etsy (& EtsyKids Team) A place where I am free to sew/ create & meet new people. I love hearing about how customers use the items that I create, the stories behind custom requests & the pictures that customers share with me.

Cupcake Dream

Posted Sunday, November 06, 2011

I love to hear from fellow Etsy boutique owners about their experiences and advice they can offer, and I know others do, too! Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting interviews with my fellow EtsyKids teammates (EtsyKids is an Etsy Street Team that focuses on sellers who make "stylish designs with kids in mind"). They have plenty of experience, and fantastic things to share!

I had the opportunity to do my first question-and-answer interview with fellow EtsyKids teammate, Tiffany, the incredibly talented owner of Cupcake Dream. (Doesn't the name sound oh-so-appealing??) Cupcake Dream specializes in "beautiful custom graphic design and handmade party accessories." (Stay tuned for a very generous Cupcake Dream offer!)

Here's Tiffany's story...

Love These Ladybug Birthday Straws
(Used Them in a Treasury!)
Boutique Name: Cupcake Dream
Contact Info Links: Facebook Fan Page, Etsy Shop, Twitter
Date Boutique Opened: Feb. 8, 2010

What Do You Sell: Custom party supplies: Invitations, cupcake toppers, favor tags, water bottle labels, and paper straws with tags

How did your shop come about? Any specific inspiration?
When my daughter was born, my husband and I decided we would take monthly pictures of her to show how she changes over the first year. Each month she would wear some new frilly creation and of course it always had to have a big bow to match. My hair accessory budget was growing out of control so I thought it would be best to make them myself. When I posted the baby pictures on my blog, I had several people ask where they can find the bows. That is when I decided to start an Etsy store. The bow business was slow but I continued adding small things (all children related) until it came time to plan my daughter's first birthday. After I completed her birthday invitation design, I knew the store needed a face lift. That is when I took my love of graphic design and party planning and created Cupcake Dream.

Do you have any particular rituals when you create? (In a specific room? A special time? While listening to certain music?)
With kids, it is hard to plan time to create. I usually try to work on designs during nap time.
The Invitation That Started It All!

What is your favorite piece in your shop?
It's really hard to pick just one design. However, there is one that I believe has more meaning than all the others so my favorite item would be the invitation that started it all (see right!)...

What do you like best about having an Etsy shop?
I really like helping customers create the perfect event. Being able to offer something unique to add a special touch to these memorable events is very rewarding.

Any new projects/designs in the pipeline?
I'm always adding new designs to the store. Customers want unique, innovative resources so I do my best to add new themes as often as possible. I feel like having more options allows the customer to find exactly what they are looking for or will offer inspiration so a custom invitation can be created.
Puppy Dog Boy Birthday Invitation

When/where do you come up with new designs? (A specific spot/thing you're doing?)
Nothing specific. Most of the time it just comes to me. There have been times when I walked through a store and saw an item that sparked a new idea. As soon as I get home I run to the drawing board and try to put together an outline. Eventually I will get to the final product.

Do you ever suffer from "designer's"-block? If so, what do you do about it?
Absolutely. When I was creating the wagon sports invitation, it started out as another car design. I was sketching and everything I came up with looked all wrong. Frustrated, I turned on the television to relax and take my mind off of things. The first thing on was a commercial with a kid riding a bike. So, I turned the car into a bike. That didn't turn out well so I kept trying until eventually the car was a wagon. I'm not sure how I went from one to the other, but there are many times when my "perfect idea" starts out as one thing and ends up completely different. When I hit "the wall" I always try to step away from what I'm doing and eventually the creative juices will start flowing again.

What's the best piece of advice given to you about running your shop?
"Run the shop, don't let it run you." There are times that I forget the Etsy store is my hobby. It's something fun that I really enjoy doing. If it isn't fun, then I'm doing something wrong and need to take some time for myself.... regroup.

Some fun questions for Tiffany...

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?
Without a doubt, Angelina Jolie. Not only does Angelina stay focused on her family and always puts them first, but she is real. She gets things done, doesn't let anyone push her around and lives her life as she wants it. I believe Angelina is a very strong woman and a great role model.
Sip & See Girl Baby Shower Invitation

Who is your dream customer?
I'm fortunate enough to say that I've had so many dream customers. Although, my favorite customer is the person who allows me to have creative license with their custom design. It's such an amazing opportunity to be able to take a few key words/details and turn it into the perfect invitation for someone. I also enjoy the customers who follow up with me after the party and let me know how the event details worked out for them or better yet, send me pictures! Repeat customers are always a pleasure as well!

What is your favorite food/favorite restaurant?
I'm a big sucker for Mexican food. I would probably eat cheese enchiladas every day if I could. (Me, too!)

If we looked in your refrigerator right now, what would we find?
Not much. Tomorrow is my grocery shopping day. Usually you would find all the boring products - milk, cheese, eggs, veggies, fruits and lots of yogurt! I like to have a cup of yogurt after I go out running.

Thanks, Tiffany, for such a great interview! As a special gift, Tiffany is generously offering a 15% discount on Cupcake Dream invitations using coupon code BLOGFAN!! Yay!

A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man-Meet My Artsy Baby

Posted Monday, September 12, 2011

Molly Wagner discovered Etsy in 2008 when she was looking for unique baby items for her 5th child. He would be sharing his parents' room for a bit, so she was looking for nursery pieces that wouldn't make the bedroom look like a preschool. She wanted it to be special and artsy without compromising their adult space.

Browsing through Etsy, not really finding exactly what she wanted, she figured she would just paint her own art for his space. It was then that she realized that she should try to open her own shop and sell the type of children's art that she was already painting for baby shower gifts.

My Artsy Baby was opened in April that year. Four months later, her son Isaac was born. It seemed from the moment he had coordination to hold a crayon, he has been his mother's shadow. He loves to paint and create with mommy, more than any of her other children did. He is completely happy staying in her "Art Room" (sometimes for hours) while she works on orders. He has his own little easel set up in one corner, and just about every coloring book he owns (which is A LOT) has been watercolor painted or colored in.

Once the older kids get home from school, they require all of their mom's attention, leaving Molly no time to work. By having Isaac painting in the same room during the day, it keeps him occupied while she works. It also still gives them quality time together. He is a quick learner, so she tries to incorporate age appropriate lessons (mixing colors, painting or drawing shapes, animal colors, etc) into their time. When he isn't painting, he might be on the floor playing with playdoh, or dancing around the room using crepe paper streamers as ribbons.

It seems as though Molly's Etsy shop was appropriately named because, as Molly says, "He truly is My Artsy Baby." Who knows, maybe he'll grow up and open his own Etsy shop some day. To his Mom, his precious little paintings already are priceless .

Loveys Among Strangers

Posted Monday, August 22, 2011

Bedtime around our house consists of the typical rituals; bath, pajamas, teeth brushing and story reading. Somewhere in the midst of these activities we also have to hunt down "Lovey", the tattered little blanket that my toddler son is so attached to, and couldn't possibly sleep without. I don't even like to contemplate what life would be like around here if Lovey were to be permanently lost, and we have had a few close calls.

My Etsy shop, Little Sidekick had only been open a few months when I received an email from a woman with an unusual request. She wanted to purchase something from me, but not any of the items I had listed for sale; she wanted to buy a stuffed monkey toy that I had used as a prop in one of my photos. Her son had officially adopted an identical monkey as his "security" item, and it had gone missing for a few days.

"I think I cried almost as much as he did" she told me, and after the monkey was recovered, she was determined to find a back-up. After searching exhaustively for one, with no luck, she stumbled across a listing of mine for a crocheted monkey hat. In the photos my son is modeling the hat and holding the exact stuffed monkey she had been looking for.

Her note went on to say that before she emailed me to ask about the monkey, she visited my blog "to see if you might have mentioned anything about the monkey being special to one of your children before I asked about it." From my blog, she discovered I was in a band, and that I had just met her husband a couple of weeks before, when my band played the music venue he owns! Given that I live in Texas, and they're in Maryland, it struck us both that this was an amazingly random coincidence of the kind that really makes you realize what a small world we live in.

Of course, I sent the monkey to her. I had to search for it, found it under the changing table, and warned her that it had probably spent at least some amount of time in my own son's mouth. For us it was just one of a gazillion stuffed animals we own and had had a brief career as a photo prop, but for her son it was a treasured childhood toy, so I was so happy to be able to help. She also ended up buying a monkey hat from me and later reported that the original monkey had lost its nose, so the replacement arrived just in time!

Michelles Zoo

Posted Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Today's Christmas contribution is from Michelle's Zoo.

One of my favorite things about Christmas when I was little was pulling out the stockings that my Grandmother hand made for us. All of her kids and grand kids had handmade stockings that she made out of felt and and sequins. By the time her great grandchildren (my kids and my nieces and nephews) came along she started making needlepoint-cross-stitch stockings. My grandmother taught me to needlepoint/cross-stitch when I was very young. I love doing all kinds of crafts, but needlepoint is probably my biggest love!!

I love giving homemade gifts. Christmas, birthdays, any excuse I can find. I started making stuffed animals in February 2010 when my niece had a baby girl. I made my first stuffed animal ever for her nursery, a pink giraffe with purple spots. Everyone in my family, my mother, especially my sister and her three kids (17, 19 and 23) love all the stuffed animals I make. Every time I make a new stuffed animal I send them pictures or post a pic to Facebook. I swear they are worse than little kids (especially my sister who happens to be 43 years old). I want it, I want one, I want that. Needless to say, there are not enough birthdays and holidays to meet their growing wish list. They definitely keep me in stitches!

Since I started making stuffed animals a year and a half ago, I have given over 50 away as gifts. I love making these adorable little stuffed animals!!! They thrill me to no end when they are finished and show up with their own little personalities. The only reason I sell them on Etsy is so that I have an excuse to keep making them. Every animal I have listed is ready to ship, which translates to my cozy living space being overrun by stuffed animals. Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Michelle's Christmas in July sale is 20% off your entire purchase. Use coupon code CIJ20 at checkout.

Silva Ware

Walter Silva shares this memory of Christmas with the Etsykids Blog today.

It was Christmas 1972, I was 3 1/2 years old and I received a Fisher Price Pull Toy from Santa.
Wow! It was a "Snoopy" dog! Not, to be mistaken for Charles Schulz ‘s Snoopy dog from "Peanuts" or the smaller Fisher Price Snoopy dog still in production (made of plastic).
This was a bigger version, a Basset Hound made out of wood and it had a plastic red leash attached to it's neck.
I remember walking "Snoopy" back and forth for hours on our driveway and walk way too. I would take "Snoopy" with me everywhere, including visits to my Grand Parents home. Those were the good ole days...

Not sure what ever happened to my "Snoopy" but he sure made an impact on my life. Matter of Fact, the illustrations used for these wonderful toys are what inspired me to study illustration!

I have been collecting Vintage Fisher Price Pull Toys for over 2 decades. I have them displayed in my studio and they continue to inspire me.

I absolutely love creating for Children. My Niece and Nephew play an important role in helping me decide what types of animals I should create and what they want to see next. Soon, I promise... Cats, Dogs, Fish and more Owls.

During the Christmas in July Sale, everything in Walter's shop is 15% off with coupon code

Owl About TZ Burps

Posted Monday, June 13, 2011

My daughter inspires everything I do at TZ Burps. I started with bibs and burp cloths when she was 2 months old. As she has grown, so have my products. They tend to match the stage of life she is in. I went from bibs to blankies, changing pads, hair clips, fairy wands, to last summer…plush owls and birds (her newest fave)!

They have become my favorite to make. I find myself hearting all the owl stuff on Etsy and we both point out owl stuff in the stores. It has taken over. What almost four year old asks to have an owl birthday party or be an owl for Halloween? That would be my daughter! I couldn’t be happier or prouder.

She can’t wait to start sewing. She is always asking to make an owl on the sewing machine. We just recently created an item that we can make together…crinkle owlies! A small minky dot owl with fleece body parts, stuffed with polyester fiberfill and a secret ingredient. The owlies have a ribbon loop at the top of their head so it can be hooked onto a car seat, high chair, stroller, etc. Their legs are made of heat sealed ribbon. So how does this involve my daughter? She came up with the name and the secret ingredient…fruit snack trash! She eats the fruit snacks, washes the empty fruit snack bag, then she stuffs it into the owlie! She thinks it is the coolest thing ever. Eat fruit snacks, reuse trash to save the Earth (as she says), and help mommy make something.

Peace, Baby! Batiks, Say It With Me

Posted Tuesday, June 07, 2011

Just about every time I work on a new batch of T-shirts, my son Q, who is nearly three and a half, places an order. First, it was a purple dump truck. Easy enough. Then, it was a gray cat. Yep, I can do that.

Now, I don’t know what he’s thinking: he wants a Mars rover T-shirt. Luckily, he wants it for his fifth birthday. I mean, I love a good challenge, but I’m glad I have a year and a half to work on that rover! (For birthday No. 4, he wants a rocket. Pink, I think.)

My son is the reason I started my business, Peace, Baby! Batiks. I am a stay-at-home mom, and I adore it, and I want to be able to stay home after my son starts kindergarten in a couple of years. I want to remain flexible for my family for holidays and vacations and sick days. So, I get up early to melt the wax I use to make my designs, and I cram as much work as I can into naptime/quiet time each day. I drag my poor kid to the post office to mail packages. He’s started to ask, “Do we have to go in?” Thanks to buying postage on PayPal, most times I can say no.

At craft fairs and markets, Q is my best billboard. My husband always makes sure they’re both wearing one of my batik tees when they come to see me. My son will sit behind my table and smile at passersby. He’ll browse my inventory and pick out things he likes, often placing more orders for shirts he wants. Then, he’ll take Dad’s hand and go do a little shopping. (That’s my boy buying handmade!)

And, he’s my guinea pig. He gets all the prototype shirts when I am trying out a new design or color combination. The advantage to this? He’s got a batik shirt for just about every day of the week. Great for marketing!

Q is the original peace baby, and he’s the inspiration and driving force behind Peace, Baby! Batiks.
