Halloween Personal Pizzas
Posted Saturday, October 29, 2011
Looking for a fun snack for a Halloween party or an easy dinner to serve Halloween night? These personal pizzas are yummy, cute and simple to make. Here's what you'll need:
1 recipe of quick pizza dough (see below) - makes ~20 - 4" pumpkins pizzas
Pumpkin cookie cutter, we used a soft grip one from Wilton
pizza or tomato sauce
mozzarella cheese
pepperoni
small paring knife
Directions:
Roll out pizza dough to ~1/4" thick. Cut with cookie cutter, and transfer to prepared cookie sheet. Leave a little space between each to allow for the dough to rise and spread while baking.
Spread each pumpkin shaped piece of dough with sauce and sprinkle which cheese. Cut a few piece of peperoni into smiles and eyes. The picture below offers one suggestion for how to cut the peperoni. Place peperoni pieces on each pumpkin pizza and bake for 5-6 minutes at 450 degrees, or until crust is done and cheese is melted.
If needed you can carefully reposition eyes or mouths right after they come out of the oven. Cool on a cooling rack and serve. They can be made a head of time and warmed in the oven before serving. Refrigerated biscuits or pizza dough from the freezer section, could also be used.
Quick Pizza Dough Recipe
1 pkg. quick rise dry yeast (aka 2-1/4 teaspoons)
1 cup lukewarm water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon honey
2-1/2 cups flour (1 cup wheat + 1-1/2 cups white)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Mix yeast in water in glass measuring cup or small bowl. In a medium size mixing bowl, combine other ingredients. Once yeast is dissolved, pour over other ingredients and mix well by hand. Let sit in bowl 5-10 minute, or use immediately. Flatten on greased pan. For pumpkin pizzas, flatten using finger tips on floured counter for cutting. Add toppings and bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes.

Peace, Baby! Batiks, Say It With Me
Posted Tuesday, June 07, 2011

Just about every time I work on a new batch of T-shirts, my son Q, who is nearly three and a half, places an order. First, it was a purple dump truck. Easy enough. Then, it was a gray cat. Yep, I can do that.
Now, I don’t know what he’s thinking: he wants a Mars rover T-shirt. Luckily, he wants it for his fifth birthday. I mean, I love a good challenge, but I’m glad I have a year and a half to work on that rover! (For birthday No. 4, he wants a rocket. Pink, I think.)
My son is the reason I started my business, Peace, Baby! Batiks. I am a stay-at-home mom, and I adore it, and I want to be able to stay home after my son starts kindergarten in a couple of years. I want to remain flexible for my family for holidays and vacations and sick days. So, I get up early to melt the wax I use to make my designs, and I cram as much work as I can into naptime/quiet time each day. I drag my poor kid to the post office to mail packages. He’s started to ask, “Do we have to go in?” Thanks to buying postage on PayPal, most times I can say no.
At craft fairs and markets, Q is my best billboard. My husband always makes sure they’re both wearing one of my batik tees when they come to see me. My son will sit behind my table and smile at passersby. He’ll browse my inventory and pick out things he likes, often placing more orders for shirts he wants. Then, he’ll take Dad’s hand and go do a little shopping. (That’s my boy buying handmade!)
And, he’s my guinea pig. He gets all the prototype shirts when I am trying out a new design or color combination. The advantage to this? He’s got a batik shirt for just about every day of the week. Great for marketing!
Q is the original peace baby, and he’s the inspiration and driving force behind Peace, Baby! Batiks.

Indoor Water Fun for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Posted Thursday, August 05, 2010
I participate in a little mom's preschool co-op for my three year-old. On the day I talked about rain, snow, wind and water, our free play activity was my own "mom" version of a water table. Because the outside weather wasn't conducive to outdoor water fun, our fun had to be inside. Whether your looking for inside fun because the heat index is over 100, or it's pouring rain, or their is a foot of snow outside, tuck this little activity away to keep your little ones active and engaged.
I used two under bed storage bins, filled them 1/3 full with warm tap water, had a plastic watering can for each child, plastic cups in different sizes and measuring cups. If your kitchen isn't fully tiled like mine, consider setting this up in another location with a tile, cement or linoleum floor that can withstand getting wet. Even the garage would work in some climates. Just be sure you choose a safe location and monitor the amount of water on the floor so children can safely move around without getting hurt.
Since I was doing this a preschool activity, I needed the kids to make it home somewhat dry, I used plastic store bags to make 'smocks' for each of them. I flattened out the bag and cut out a shallow C shape from the middle of the bottom 'seam' of the bag to make an neck opening. Leave 3 inches of the seam on both ends, these will be the shoulders of the smock. Next cut open both sides of the plastic bag all the way to the bottom seam. Snip the handles apart to create ties. This should resemble something like a scrimmage jersey.Slip their head through the opening in the bottom of the bag, and tie the handles securely at their hips.
If you're doing this at home with your own kids, swimming suits would make it extra fun, especially in winter!
Keep a stack of towels on hand, because try as they might, water will get on the floor and you'll want to wipe it up periodically so your feet don't get cold and wet and to keep it safe for them.
These kids played with this set up for a 30-45 minutes, with no sign of getting bored. To do this activity outside, prop the storage bins up on buckets or set up two folding chairs facing each other, using the seats to set the water bin on, making it accessible from both sides and would allow up to four kids to participate.
* * This activity requires constant adult supervision! Do not ever leave a child playing with water unattended. A child can easily drowned in just a few inches of water.

Sibling Rivalry...
Posted Saturday, September 26, 2009

Siblings are the best and worst of friends during childhood, which is right on psychologically-their sole purpose is to gain a parent's attention, and irking a sib is often the way to do it.
I hated when my mother refused to get involved in our spats. "Work it out," she'd say. "I don't' want to hear about it."
But my mom was right. That conflict resolution she forced us to learn not only taught us to navigate relationships, it made us the best of friends as adults.
Many experts say parents shouldn't try to eliminate it as much as moderate it. "Sibling rivalry is a dress rehearsal for life," says Elaine Fantle Shimberg, the Tampa Author of Blending Families and mother of five..You have to learn to communicate and you have to make compromises."
Think before stepping in. "Parents, wishing only to see their kids smiling, sometimes hijack the process," says Chicago psychologist Aaron Cooper, author of I just want my kids to be happy! Why you shouldn't' say it, why you shouldn't think it, what you should embrace instead. They mix in when sibs bicker or fight, thinking it's the way to promote peace. In fact, it backfires much of the time."
Kids in the Kitchen
Posted Tuesday, July 28, 2009
When I was a preschool teacher, I had learned to turn food into many different things to fit the classroom theme of the week! Learning about the ocean this week? Well then whip some cream cheese with a few drops of blue food coloring and have the kids dip goldfish crackers in it! Yum. Easy!
Or how about making Aquarium Cups with blue jello?

Jello...Pudding...Crackers...Veggies...they all make yummy treats for kids! But...the fun part is creating a spectacular treat out of the ordinary, everyday ingredients. And it doesn't have to be hard. Look around your kitchen...what do you have already sitting in your cabinets that will help you create a fun & tasty treat that your kids will love & even brag about?!
In celebration of the summer sun and blasting heat...this week we made Sandy Beach Cups in our house. Take a peek at just how easy they are to make!

All you need is:
Pudding Snack Cups (or make your own instant pudding & put it in clear plastic cups)
Graham Crackers (or if you have a box of crushed graham cracker crumbs on hand, it'll save you a step)
Lifesaver Gummy Rings
Teddy Grahams
Paper Umbrella Picks
All you have to do is crush graham crackers (or use the already crushed ones) and sprinkle them on top of the pudding cups. Allow your kids to 'decorate' their sandy beach cups with Teddy Grahams and Gummy Lifesaver rings (representing the Teddy's lifesaver floaties). Embellish with a paper umbrella pick and you've got yourself...I mean, your kids have a tasty summer themed treat!
And the best part about this snack is...I set up a little assembly line on the table and my children helped to create their own snacks! It was a fun activity that filled the tummy and enlightened their creativity all at the same time!
Enjoy!
De-Junking in Practice!!!
Posted Saturday, June 06, 2009
So we got back to the house - pulled on the swimsuits and headed to the pool. I felt totally free for the rest of the day - and the funny thing is - when we got back home I started noticing TONS of other things that I can totally live without - kind of like - once I got the first load out - and knew how good it felt - I realized the happy feeling the 'stuff' gives me compares in NO way to the AWESOME feeling getting rid of the 'stuff' does. SO! my new commitment is (like Supermom suggested) to keep a goodwill pile in the house and then EVERY Saturday I'm taking it to good will - I dont care if it is nothing more than a purse, sweater, or book.
Im super excited about my new de-junking journey and look forward to making my house look the way I want it to - once I get all the clutter out!
I would LOVE to hear any stories or suggestions! If you missed last week's conversation - read it here :)
Happy Weekend! XO
